Alleged Police Brutality In Ashanti Akim

9:34:00 AM

There have been a number of high profile cases of alleged police brutality and extortion in Ashanti Akim in which the Konongo police command tortured, publicly humiliated and violently beat people in the area - in some cases to the point of death.

The most notorious of these incidents occurred on November 2017, however recent reports indicate that on Friday 17th of November, Chief Inspector Baanie the station officer of Konongo divisional police in charge, detective Lance Corporal Victor and so called crime officer Ben together with eight macho men all in civil dress forcefully entered a place at Domeabra in the Ashanti Akim and attacked people resulting in severe beatings and injuries.

The police suspected the victims of dealings in India hemp of which they arrested six of them with no evidence. They further went to the next town called Juansa and stormed another place with the same arrest of five people, worst of all one victim who had a motor accident and was responding to treatment was also beaten and arrested for no reason.

They proceeded to Kyekyebiase which is also another town in Ashanti Akim central and again attacked and beat one kwadwo Fosu who was on his way to visit a friend which resulted in him missing two of his teeth. The victims were all placed in custody at Konongo Police station without any apparent reason.

The Konongo police allegedly demanded an amount of ghc2000 each from the victims before their release with no proof of possessing Indian hemp as the police accused them of. An amount of ghs2400 was contributed and given to one Kofi who claimed to be a national security personnel to be given to the Konongo divisional commander for their release. The Konongo police confirmed they did not receive any money from the said Kofi. Meanwhile the same victims contributed another amount of ghc10000 for their release which they think the Konongo police infringed on their rights and took their money for no offence committed.
