Demonstration To Hit Asanko Gold MiningResidents Say Enough Is Enough

2:05:00 PM

At a time government is doing everything possible to bring sanity into the small-scale gold mining sector in the country, some mining firms continue to mine in clear violation of the rules and regulations government their operations.

One of such mining companies which have come under the spotlight of abusing peoples rights through their operations is Asanko Gold Mining Co. Ltd located at Manso Koninase in the Amansie West District of Ashanti Region.

According to the residents of Manso Koninase they have been subjected to serious human rights abuses through the activities of Asanko Mining Co. Ltd which began gold mining operations in the town in the year 2012. They added that managers of the company have virtually taken them for a ride. A visit to the town by this reporter reveals important damages have been caused to several buildings which have resulted in cracks as a result of the blasting from the company with several other properties running into several millions of cedis destroyed.

As if that was not enough this reporter also saw how river Ayensu the only source of drinking water for the town which links to River Offin has been deliberately blocked and now serves as a bleeding ground for mosquitoes.

Residents therefore have no source of drinking water but management has failed to provide at least one borehole water project for them. Residents also accuse the company of not properly disposing off their waste materials which finds its way to the town.

They are also constantly bombarded with smokes coupled with noise and the dust from the blasts but worst of all the companys activities have collapsed a number of buildings while the resettlement of affected residents has been in limbo since the death of one resident during the resettlement exercise.
