Tema Dockworkers Lock Up CEOs Office

4:35:00 PM

There was labour unrest at Tema on Wednesday, 3 May as workers of Tema Dock Labour Company, a subsidiary of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), locked up the CEOs office in protest against the non-payment of their SSNIT contributions.

The workers were downhearted with the CEO, Mark Boafo, on issues relating to the payment of SSNIT, Provident Fund, and salary increment.

Speaking to Class News, Alex Osei, the local union chairman, said the workers wanted Mr Boafo out of office.

Since 2013 when this director took over, he hasnt paid our tier II pension and SSNIT, he stated.

The union executives havent received any positive feedback from him after all the pressure weve mounted on him to address our concerns. We have reported to the Board Chairman who even expressed shock our SSNIT contributions have not been paid since 2013. He pays some months and leaves the rest. The director doesnt listen to us. We have Provident Fund and he is the manager of the fund but even the union executives do not even know where he has saved our Provident Fund.

Meanwhile, police were present to maintain peace. The leadership of the union is expected to meet with relevant stakeholders on Thursday, 4 May, to find a lasting solution to their concerns.
