AMA To Enforce Laws On Illegal Structures

3:20:00 PM

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has warned the public to stop putting up illegal structures and buildings along the stretch from Avenor to Sikkens Bridge and Agbogbloshie in Accra.

Numo Blafo Omaetu III, the Public Relation Officer of the AMA gave the warning in a statement and copied to the Ghana News Agency.

The statement ordered those putting up structures on the government lands along the Odaw River, Korle Lagoon, Old Fadama, East Legon Green Belt, Mensah Guinea and the Railway Station near the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, to immediately put a stop to them, so as to avoid embarrassment from the authorities.

It noted that structures and buildings at these places were demolished by the AMA Taskforce last year, to allow free-flow of rained water, but they were resurfacing, which would lead to flooding and pose a danger to human lives and properties in the area.

The statement also reminded hawkers who applied their trading on footbridges, beneath overpasses and on pavements in the Accra Metropolis, to desist from the act because their activities were contrary to the AMA Street Hawking bye-laws and the Road Traffic Act.

The AMA cautioned garage owners who have turned pavements as their parking lot and mechanical shops to stop and remove them or would face the full rigours of the law.

It said their activities were some of the factors to flooding in the metropolis.

The statement urged the public to co-operate with the AMA to avoid disasters and to make Accra a better place for all citizens
