Bodies Of Dead African Migrants Wash Up On Libyan Shores (Photos)

On Saturday, October 29th, 11 bodies of dead African migrants washed up on the shores of Janzour, the western suburb of Tripoli and the numbers are on the rise.

The municipal council has called on Libyan authorities to deal with the bodies. Municipal member Abdul-Salam Abu Gharsa said they are confused about what to do with the bodies.

"The Attorney General has issued an order not to receive any bodies at Tripoli hospitals because morgues there are filled with corpses, and here in Janzour we have no morgues," he said.
Same day, several bodies of migrants also washed up on Sabratha beach. In a related development, amid rough seas and horrible weather condition that hit the capital on Friday, two Libyan nationals risked their lives to rescue another group of illegal migrants off the coast of Janzour.

Following an emergency call from the desperate migrants to local authorities, Arebi Aboras and Ahmed Diknah had to battle the waves on jet skis to save the boat that was overloaded with migrants some few kilometres off the shore.

The daring men managed to rescue 8 migrants separately while the rest on board drowned. The survivors are receiving treatment at Janzour hospital now. One of the survivors said they sailed off from Sabratha on Wednesday on three boats; each one was loaded with around 150 migrants. Hours later, they were lost at sea and did not know what to do.

Many were drowned, he said, while their boat was taken away by the waves near the shore, where the two Libyan nationals had found them.

Politicians Endangering Our Lives, Electoral Commission Staff

The Electoral Commission says its members and staff draw strength from service to the nation to enable them withstand all forms of attack on them by some individuals and groups.

Deputy Chairperson for Corporate Services, Georgina Opoku Amankwaa says attempts to vilify and discredit even the commissioners and their work can be demoralizing.

She says such tendencies could discourage many competent people from sacrificing and making available their expertise for national progress.
Ms Opoku Amankwaa spoke exclusively to Nhyira FM in Kumasi.

Members of the E.C have, in recent times, come under public attack, especially from leadership of some political parties.

Presidential aspirant of All People's Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, recently used unprintable words on live radio against commission Chairperson, Charlotte Osei.

It followed his disqualification together with 12 others for anomalies in their nomination forms.

Ms Opoku Amankwaa says though such attacks are considered occupational hazards, they could have serious psychological effects on victims.

According to her, though members of the EC sometimes laugh off such attacks, it is however becoming too much, especially the verbal assault on the EC and the vilification of its chairperson, Charlotte Osei for no wrong doing.

With no particular reference to Mr. Ayariga who later apologized for his comments, she says attacking people who work diligently to keep their offices could be demoralizing and do not augur well for Ghana as a nation.

Ms Opoku Amankwaa concedes the commission, like any human institution, is bound to make mistakes, it becomes an issue when it is deliberate.

She, however, maintains it provides no excuse for politicians to pitch their supporters against commissioners and staff.

According to her, comments by political leaders that the EC will rig the elections are unacceptable and could pitch their supporters against the Electoral Commission.

Man Pours Hot Water On Wife's Private Parts...(Photos)

A 30-year-old mother of two from Kianamu Village in Embu County, Kenya, is nursing serious burns on her thighs and private parts after her husband poured hot water on her.

Catherine Wakere was taken to Siakago Level Four Hospital last Wednesday, two weeks after the attack. Her upper right thigh and her private parts had started developing infections when she was taken to the hospital.

According to the hospital’s Nursing Officer Secinta Nyaga, the woman was only taken to hospital when a neighbour learnt of the cruel assault. Ms Wakere said her husband, Charles Njiru, 36, had without any provocation, poured boiling water on her. Around 11am on that fateful day, she was heating water for him when he suddenly grabbed a bowl, scooped the water and threw it on her thighs and private parts.

"He just scooped water that was boiling and splashed it on my thighs. He had aimed at my private parts, which were partly scalded," she said.

Ms Nyaga said the wound had deteriorated due to the lengthy stay without medication but her condition has since improved.

"Hers is a case of gender violence, which we reported to the police before treating her. The wound was in a very terrible state since it appeared to have stayed for two weeks without being treated. If it was a fresh would it would have healed. She is now in a stable condition." she said. Ms Wakere’s left thigh also bears another scar of a healed burn injury while she has two broken fingers, all said to have been inflicted by the husband. She had also told doctors that her fingers broke when she fell.

The hospital has also alerted the Children's Department to take care of the victim's children, a two-year-old girl and a boy, seven. Her mother, Daisy Muthoni, who is looking after her in hospital, said she was scared of visiting her daughter’s home due to the cruelty of her husband.

News of the assault caused uproar among women leaders in Embu, with county assembly gender committee chairperson Peninah Mutua calling on police to crack down on perpetrators of gender violence. Mbeere North Assistant County Commissioner, Benjamin Birech said the man has been arrested and will be taken to court once his wife files an official complaint. He said the woman had reported being repeatedly beaten up and sexually harassed by the man.

"We will charge him with causing grievous harm. She says that the man beats her regularly. He is reported to be a habitual user of bhang and miraa," said Mr Birech, adding that the man could have been under the influence of drugs when he poured hot water on his wife."

It was started in the Upper West Region in August but hit a snag when it had into some challenges forcing coordinators to step back.

The National Coordinator of the Ghana Social Opportunities Project (GSOP), Robert Austin noted that since they resumed work, they have done tremendously well starting with outlandish communities where they enjoy significant corporation from the chief and people.

“We started our work from the hinterland where communities are sparse and getting access is a challenge, but gradually we are zoning into the urban areas.

"As we speak, over 80,000 households enumerated, if you go to the 2010 census the number of households in Upper West is 110,000…we have some 40,000 or 50,000 more households more to cover,” he said.

Robert Austin made this revelation in Wa when he called on the Upper West Regional Minister, Amin Amidu Sulemani.

He said the Register will boost Social Protection Programmes in deprived regions like the Upper West where strides are being made.

He revealed that the data will be ready early January 2017 for use by social protection programmes.

“When the data is available and there is any social protection programme within any sector and you to access the impact of that social intervention on the extreme poor, we can give you data that will help you carry out such a study.”

Upper West Regional Minister, Amin Amidu Sulemani, commended enumerators of the programme for the good work done so far and pledged his support to ensure that the programme becomes a success.

U-Turn As Aisha Buhari Decides To Campaign For Husband Again

The wife of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has said she is seeking “the success of my husband’s administration,” weeks after saying she may not campaign for him at the next election.

Aisha Buhari gave an interview to the BBC earlier in October, in which she said that Buhari did not know “45 out of 50” of the people he had appointed as ministers and government officials. The first lady also said that she would not campaign for her husband ahead of the next election in 2019 “if things continue like this.”

The interview prompted a sharp acknowledgement from Buhari. When asked about her comments, the Nigerian presidentâ€"who was sharing a platform with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin at the timeâ€"said that his wife “belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room.” Buhari’s comments were widely criticized by Nigerians on Twitter using #TheOtherRoom.

The first lady visited several areas in Borno state Thursday. The northeastern state has been at the epicenter of Boko Haram’s armed insurgency against the Nigerian state: more than 26,000 people have died in Borno since May 2011, according to the Council on Foreign Relations’ Nigeria Security Tracker.

“On our campaign promises to Nigerians, especially to the people of Borno state, we thank Almighty Allah for giving us the opportunity of beginning to fulfill these promises,” said Aisha Buhari on Thursday, Nigeria’s Premium Times reported.

The first lady added that the “essence of being a fine leader” was trying to fulfil promises. “That is what we are all after. And what I am after in particular is the success of my husband’s administration,” she added.

Since Buhari came to power in May 2015, the Nigerian military and regional forces have driven Boko Haram back to its northeastern hideout of the Sambisa forest. The group now controls little territory but continues to carry out sporadic guerrilla attacks.

Aisha Buhari praised her husband’s success in tackling Boko Haram in the original BBC interview. “No one is complaining about being attacked in their own homes...Even kids in Maiduguri have returned to schools,” said the first lady, referring to the capital of Borno state.

Yoruba Congress For Kumasi

An All-Yoruba Congress has been scheduled to be held in Kumasi between 9th and 11th March 2017, organisers have announced during a press conference held at the Accra International Press Centre yesterday.

The media programme simultaneously kicked off activities prior to the main event next year.

In his address to the media, Alhaji Musa Baba, President of the Yoruba Community in Ghana said the programme was mooted by elders of the large population of the ethnic group across the country.

The elders want to, through such a congress, showcase the rich Yoruba culture and to prevent the youth from losing touch with their ancestry according to Alhaji Musa Baba who is one of the close to a million Ghanaian Yorubas born in the country.

“The congress will also afford Yorubas in Ghana the opportunity to travel to one big town where, especially the youth, will mix together and engage in all forms of contests, singing, dancing, dressing, cooking and what have you. It will also afford Ghanaians the opportunity to appreciate the true Yoruba culture. This will surely promote unity between the Yorubas and Ghanaians that will lead to national unity and cohesion,” he said.

He announced that organizers have sought and received the blessings of the traditional authorities of the Yorubas in the persons of the Alafin of Oyo and the Ooni of Ife who are the two most powerful Yoruba rulers.

Many Yorubas from Nigeria and the Diaspora will troop to Kumasi for the programme; an opportunity to showcase the country to those coming here for the first time.

As to why the programme is being held in Ghana and Kumasi in particular, he said the country has the largest concentration of Yorubas and their descendants outside Nigeria, the population put at conservatively a million. Kumasi, considered central location in the country will afford Yorubas from the Northern regions and South to converge upon a central location with little or no inconvenience, he said to a question.

The chairman of the conference Alhaji Sidiku Buari who is a descendant of Yoruba migrants but a Ghanaian by birth recalled how he and others of Nigerian extraction have contributed immensely towards the development of the country.

“I am an athlete of repute having competed in international competitions in the early 70s for Ghana. In one such instance, I ran an event in which a single point was needed to define the contrast between the winner and the loser. I made that contrast to make Ghana beat Nigeria” he said.

Alhaji Gafaru, a retired soldier and a Ghanaian of Yoruba extraction showed his decorations from his long service in the Ghana Armed Forces.

It is also expected that the about two hundred years of the history of Yorubas in this country would be adequately highlighted through such a congress and subsequent ones.

Present at the conference were Alhaji Razak El Alawa, a veteran Ghanaian journalist also of Yoruba extraction and a former Press Secretary to the late President Hilla Limann, Sidiku Buari, former President of MUSIGA, Chiefs of Yorubas in Kasoa, Ashaiman, Konongo and a representative of Chief Brimah family in Accra.

Pray For EC To Ensure Fairness In Polls - Lawrence Tetteh

The President of the World Miracle Outreach Church, Dr Lawrence Tetteh, has urged Ghanaians and religious leaders to pray for wisdom and God’s guidance for the Electoral Commission (EC) and its Chairperson, Mrs Charlotte Osei, in the discharge of their duties to ensure fairness in the upcoming election.

He also asked for prayers for all the stakeholders that help the EC such as the EC staff, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the security services and the society in their discharge of its duties.

At a press conference in Accra yesterday, Dr Tetteh also pleaded with the media to be circumspect in their reportage on the election.

“Desist from getting drawn into the banter of politicians; safeguarding your esteemed profession and your love for Ghana should be your guiding principle,” he added.

The evangelist advised the media to ensure their gate-keeping role to get the right agenda for the nation to be united with the message of hope and unity.

Dr Tetteh also admonished the clergy to be mindful of their predictions and utterances on who would win the December polls, stating that God already knew the winner because kings and leaders were enthroned by Him.

He rather urged members of the clergy to rise up to their responsibilities as men and women of God, and maintain their respect as spiritual gatekeepers of the land.

The famed evangelist said predictions should be avoided so that the country would have a meaningful election devoid of political tension and unrest.

‘’As spiritual leaders, our core responsibility is to pray for our leaders and the nation, but not to predict election results. That is the work of the EC,” he said.

Walk the talk

Mr Tetteh appealed to presidential candidates of the various political parties to ensure that they “walk the talk”, adding, “It is the collective responsibility of the people of Ghana to present a massive united front to promote the peace and welfare of our beloved country.”

He noted that Ghanaians should cease to discredit leaders based on their past verbal abuse, use of intemperate language, character assassination, vain promises, violence and threats, as well as their culture of insult, but rather have confidence in them this time.

The evangelist concluded that “If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I forgive their sins, and would heal their land,” (2 Chronicles 7:14), and invited Ghanaians to gather at the Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Accra for a three- day crusade to pray for Ghana.

Women Bring Diverse Experiences Into Decision Making - Joyce Aryee

Women’s representation in decision-making positions in corporate organisation, especially as board members in companies, is key for such boards to get diversity of experience and perspectives to function properly and effectively.

According to gender experts, women are said to bring the needed diversity on board as they have diverse skills and experiences and this can drive growth, improve on performance, manage risks, attract and retain investors and deal with financial crises.

At a forum organised by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), with help from the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and the Swiss Embassy in Ghana, it came out that for a board “to be truly effective, it requires a diversity of skills, culture and views to make smart decisions with lasting impact.”

The Regional Programme Manager, IFC Corporate Governance, Ms. Chinyere Almona, said companies with more women on their boards had higher results.

Ghana, she said, was in 2015 ranked 53 out of 145 countries with women on boards by the Global Gender Report.

That, she said, was not encouraging as the country could do more. She stressed that tapping into the under-utilised resource of people increased growth in organisations and promoted the overall gross domestic product (GDP) of a country.

Launch of research

The Executive Director of Salt and Light Ministries, Dr. Joyce Aryee, who launched a ‘Women on Boards Research Initiative’ to be undertaken by IFC and UGBS, said, “Although there are no empirical data, evidence shows that many women are doing well.”

She said the research initiative was going to support in identifying women with potential so as to bring them into the limelight.

Presently, she said, a lot of women were “breaking the glass ceiling” not only to prove a point but also to make themselves available.

The Deputy Head of Corporation, Counsellor, Swiss Embassy, Mr. Daniel Lavventura, said an increased visibility of women at senior levels increased women’s ability to act as change agents in societies.

He said if an economy used only half of its talented people, it would lead to economic loss. “Corporate governance, including women on boards, leads to economic growth,” he added.

Go The Extra Mile To Cross Check The Facts EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has asked the media to go the extra mile to cross check and get the facts right in their election reports.

Ms. Georgina Opoku Amankwaa, a Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, said they should not carry wild and unsubstantiated allegations that could create confusion in the minds of the people.

It was vital for journalists to demand that politicians provided proof â€" solid evidence to back claims of bias, they had kept making against the EC.

She made the call at a media interaction organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa in Kumasi.
That provided the platform for journalists in the Ashanti Region to seek clarification of issues bothering on the electoral system and preparations towards the December 07 polls.

Ms. Opoku Amankwaa stated that the Commission had been open and transparent in everything it had done, adding that there had been stakeholder involvement in all major decisions relating to the conduct of the election.

She discounted the allegation by the largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the EC was conniving with some foreign telecommunication companies to tamper with collation figures in its strongholds during the transmission of election results to favour the ruling party.

A leading member of the party is reported to have said that the EC was conniving with STL and Huawei - both telecommunication companies, to alter election figures during the transmission of results from the NPP stronghold.
Ms. Opoku Amankwaa said it was not true that the Commission had engaged any company to transmit elections results from collation centres in the constituencies to its headquarters.

She underlined the resolve of the election management board to conduct free, fair, transparent and credible polls.
She therefore called on Ghanaians to continue to help and to have confidence in the Commission.

Mr Sule Amadu, Deputy Chairperson in-charge of Operations, said the media was a key partner in ensuring transparency and participation of all in the processes leading to the election.

He gave the assurance that the Commission was on-course despite the numerous legal challenges.
Mr Amadu appealed to the media not to allow politicians to use their platform to create confusion and panic among the people.

Professor Kwame Karikari, a media and communications expert, said it was not acceptable for any media house, no matter the objective of its establishment, to peddle lies and to do anything unethical.

The National Media Commission has appointed Dr Kwame Akuffo Anoff-Ntow as the new Director-General (DG) of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
His appointment takes effect from November 1, this year.

He takes over from Major Albert B. Don-Chebe (retd), who was appointed as the state broadcaster’s DG  for a three-year term, effective May 14, 2013 but decided not to return to the corporation after taking his accumulated leave in February this year, largely because of worker agitations.

Major Don-Chebe’s first term was to expire in May 2016.

The Deputy DG of the corporation, Mrs Francis Ashietey-Odunton, has been in charge over in an acting capacity since March this year.

A statement issued by the commission and signed by its Chairman, Mr Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, said: “Dr Anoff-Ntow has close to two decades of professional experience in broadcasting as a practitioner and scholar.”

“His professional experience spans public broadcasting at GBC, as well as consulting for other media and communication interests across the world,” it said.

It said as a trained television producer/director, he had produced, directed and executively produced many television programmes across several genres.

Dr Anoff-Ntow’s  background

“Dr Anoff-Ntow, therefore, comes to the role of Director-General with intimate knowledge of editorial and operational workings of global public broadcasting,” it said.

As a member of the International Public Television (INPUT) forum, Dr Anoff-Ntow has undertaken many projects around best practices in public broadcasting and media.

He was one of the 16 programme experts from around the world who planned and led sessions at INPUT international conferences in Germany, Switzerland and South Africa.

He is a member of the Ghana Journalists Association, the Canadian Communication Association and sits on the board of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA).

Dr Anoff-Ntow takes over at a time workers of the corporation are embroiled in a turf war with the corporation’s board members and some management members who have been locked out on two occasionsâ€"July 13, 2016 and September 30, 2016.

GBC red flags

In February this year, workers of the GBC raised red flags against the board members, citing mismanagement of the corporation and recruitment of some workers through the back door.

They accused the board of appointing some management members to micromanage GBC, a situation that did not create a conducive atmosphere for the growth of the corporation.

The local union and the workers have since then appealed to the Ministry of Communication and the National Media Commission (NMC) to intervene.

Minister Blocks Chiefs Cash

THE MINISTER of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Dr. Seidu Danaa appears to be in serious loggerhead with members of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs (GARHC), following his decision to block payment of their allowances for some months.

Dr. Danaa was said to have blocked the release of the chiefs’ allowances which has been in arrears for three months and was also alleged to have changed signatories to their accounts without their consent.

Members of GARHC who addressed a press conference at the Regional House of Chiefs office in Dodowa expressed worry at the continuous disrespect the Minister is exhibiting towards them.

Nene Atsure Benta III, Mankralo for Prampram Traditional Area speaking at the conference on Monday disclosed that “We, the members of this august House know why the Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs is seizing our money, but we want to tell him that we will not beg him to release it. He can continue keeping it for us.”

Stating what might cause the minister to block their money, Nene Benta clarified that the minster was acting bitterly against the House because they were against the transfer of the Registrar of GARHC, Harry Anthony Attipoe.

He believed that the animosity started after GARHC tasked the registrar, to use his rich experience in the Chieftaincy Acts to hold workshops and seminars for all the paramountcies in the region which has gone a long way to ensure sanity in the region.

In the course of the workshops, the Mankralo stated that the minster directed the members of the House to call off the workshop “because he said Attipoe was projecting himself too much.”

He noted that the minster took advantage of the persistent protest embarked by some Ga-Adangbe youth over unproven allegations that the registrar had sold some Kpone lands, to transfer the registrar to the Volta Region.

“We are not against transfer, but that should not be used as a form of punishment on somebody who has been tasked by another body to support it be abreast with some developments it does not understand.”

“The immense peace we are enjoying in our various traditional areas is as a result of the hard work and constant workshops on conflict resolution Harry Attipoe has been taking the paramount chiefs in the Region through,” Nene Benta pointed out.

Well Stop Privatization Of ECG - TUC

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has served notice it will resist the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In strong worded letter to the Flagstaff House , the TUC accused the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) of betraying the Union by going ahead to announce a planned Builders Conference on the private sector participation of the ECG, scheduled for Monday, October 31, 2016.

“We would like to state that, in line with the resolution passed at TUC 10th Quadrennial Delegates Congress held in August 2016 at KNUST, we will resist any attempt to privatize ECG,” it letter said.

It further impressed on government to stop MiDA from going ahead with the Bidders’ Conference and to ensure that prompt measures are taken to consider the options proposed by the Union.

According to the TUC, MiDA’s action is a demonstration of terrible faith since deliberations with the Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) of TUC who are opposed to the privatization has not concluded its work.

“You may recall that at the meeting of the Technical Committee held at the Flagstaff House on 20th September, 2016 it was agreed that the Bidders Conference would be postponed until there was a acknowledgement from your office on the policy issues raised at the meeting. It was further agreed that this would be done within a timeframe of three weeks,” it said.

“Regrettably, the three weeks have elapsed and there has not been any acknowledgement from your office yet MiDA, whose key officials were present at the said meeting, is going ahead to hold the Bidders’ Conference on Monday, 31st October, 2016.

This action by MiDA undermines the process and the spirit of consultation”, the letter pointed out.

Ghana First In Sub-Sahara To Halve Extreme Poverty Under MDGs

Ghana is the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to have met the MDGs to cut extreme poverty by half in relation to the Millennium Development Goals initiative, which ended in 2015.

Ghana also made substantial progress in reducing the prevalence of HIV, increasing access to primary education for girls and boys equally, and also reducing hunger.

These were contained in a release from the Office of the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations, which outlined the report on the implementation of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF).

The report summarises key development results achieved in Ghana in 2014 and 2015 with UN support.

It also highlights how the UN is contributing to agricultural modernisation, food security and nutrition, environmental sustainability, water and sanitation, expanding effective public social services to reach the marginalised and institutional capacity for fine governance.

The release stated, 'Ghana has been a strong partner of the UN through its leadership in the consultation process to develop the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, and in the fight against Ebola by hosting the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response, to help the affected countries in West Africa in 2014 and 2015.'

It said the UN's help in Ghana took many forms from making available global expertise and adapting fine practices to national circumstances and needs.

Facilitating South to South exchanges, providing technical assistance, advocating and enabling compliance with international standards ratified by Ghana, undertaking research and applying it to policy issues, and building up capabilities in data collection and use to inform policy decisions and monitor their implementation, are also some forms of UN help in Ghana, the release said.

It quoted Christine Evans-Klock, the UN Resident Coordinator as saying, 'The 25 UN agencies working in Ghana are most effective when we harmonise our efforts.'

He said the commitment to delivering as one, served as a guide on how working together across the UN mandate could promote development in every area of human endeavour, the release added.

The release said the UN Country Team counted on strong partnerships in completing the implementation of the 2012-2017 UNDAF and developing its successor, the strategic framework for UN work 2018-2021.

This framework is expected to focus help on localising and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals through Ghana's national development plans, the release said.

(VIDEO) Media "Exaggerating" Reports Of Power Cuts...Outages Will End Soon - ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has blamed Ghana's media and social media for 'exaggerating' reports about the perennial energy crises confronting the nation.

Addressing a press conference, Director of Operations of the ECG, Engineer Tetteh Okyne said if the nation was experiencing “dumsor”, the company would announce it and not conceal the truth.

He noted that the energy suppliers have assured ECG of quality energy.

He told the press that the "suppliers of energy have assured us that there’s energy coming. So, we based on that, we’re going ahead to plan our jobs and our things to ensure that we’ll be able to give reliable supply to our customers.”

Touching on incidents that account for the recent power crises, Engineer Okyne cited cable theft, cable encroachments and road accidents tilting the electricity poles among other failures as some causal factors.

According to him, the ECG is working hard to ensure they supply electricity to consumers in the country.

“I must say that we have been doing a lot of work [a lot of work]. A lot of projects because there are supply quality regulations which we need to meet. So, at any time, we have a lot of projects going on. So, it’s difficult to say that we are not going to have outages because as we do the projects, we need to get outages to connect them onto the network…If there’s dumsor, we have to announce it.”

Director of Engineering at the ECG, Kwadwo Ayensu Obeng, on his part noted that the periodic power outages are normal phenomena, but there appears to be greater emphasis on them by the media making it seem as if it is a "prevailing thing".

“Outages have been with us for a long time but today, because of social media and your presence, the power goes off in one area; one radio station picks it and announces it. You also pick it and announce it and it’s as if a whole area is off. It may just be one feeder which is off. So, today, there’s greater awareness and there’s greater reportage. That is why it appears that it’s a prevailing thing but it’s not so," he told the gathering.

These comments follow up on the ECG's announcements that the country is not experiencing load shedding, popularly called "dumsor".

I Don't Regret Having Sex with my Dad

A 25-year old woman resident of Koforidua in the Eastern region who has been accused of incest has defended her action indicating that she has no regrets having sexual intercourse with his biological father.

Lydia Opoku popularly referred to Daddy’s Pet, was caught by her mother Mrs. Opoku, engaging in hot sexual bouts with his father on their matrimonial bed; an act that has been described as despicable by neighhbours.

According to Bryt Fm’s Sakyiama Gaston Abigail report, Mrs Opoku is yet to get out of her shock after earlier collapsing and becoming unconscious in view of the sacrilege committed by father and daughter.

“I couldn’t believe what I saw and if anyone had told me, I wouldn’t have believed it either” she lamented.

Mrs Opoku claims her daughter openly confessed to being in love with the father and revealed this was not the first time they have had sex and on the same bed.

Shocked Mrs Opoku disclosed that her choice of adjectives like’ honey, sweetheart, first love’ in describing her husband each time he was away and spoke to her via phone as worrying until the latest discovery.

Religious leaders in the area including Rev. James Nii Commey, General overseer of Army of Christ Ministry indicate that such abominable acts could have some spiritual connotations.

GRIDCo Assures Of Adequate Power

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has assured the general public that there is enough power available for distribution by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GRIDCo, Mr William Amuna, while the generation peak presently stood at 1,956 megawatts (MW), the peak demand yesterday stood at 1870 MW.

Parts of Accra have been experiencing power outages over the last couple of days, raising concerns that the country might be returning to the era of load shedding, popularly known as ‘dumsor’, but Mr Amuna discounted the claims.

“Occasionally, we will have some challenges in the distribution networks, but that does not mean we don’t have enough power”, Mr Amuna told the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of the company’s 2016 Safety and Health Awareness Day celebrations in Tema yesterday.

Mr Amuna’s assertions thus reaffirm the position of the ECG that the current power crisis is not an indication of power crisis or the return of load shedding.

Plants available

While the Sunon Asogli Power Plant is presently out of  production due to natural gas supply challenges, the Tema Three Power Plant, Kpong Hydro Plant, Takoradi International Company (TICO) are all in production, giving total megawatts of 1631.3 as of 12:14 p.m. yesterday, and indications are that production volumes would rise by close of day.

The Karpower ship and the Ameri Plants are also producing 224 and 210 megawatts respectively.

Mr Amuna described as normal Ghana’s importation of some quantities of power from neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire.

“Virtually every country in the world imports  power even if there is available generation capacity. Moreover, it is imperative that we import in order to reduce pressure on the Akosombo Dam”, Mr Amuna stressed.

He gave the assurance that the company would continue to work hard to address the challenges within the company’s distribution networks.

Workers durbar

Earlier, addressing the workers, Mr Amuna charged them to adhere strictly to the health and safety regime to ensure high efficiency in the company’s operations.

“We work in a very challenging and unsafe environment and I will urge all staff to continue to do their best to eliminate incidents and accidents within the workplace.”

Mr Amuna said incidents and accidents at the workplace might bring injuries and fatalities which were most often stressful for the individuals involved as well as for their families and friends.

He therefore charged the staff, especially those in the technical units, to be very conversant with their safety procedures and practices to avert injuries and loss of lives.

And it was the same day on which the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), commenced a five-day tour of the Volta Region.

Nana Akufo-Addo charged 'Voltarians' to change President John Mahama’s government on December 7 and return the country to the path of progress and prosperity.

But the lawyer for Dr. Nduom, Ayikoi Otu said they had a solid submission and did not expect the Accra High court to uphold the reliefs of his client.

On Wednesday, the Ghana Armed Forces commenced investigating claims that brother of President Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama was using a military escort.

It also emerged that the University of Cape Coast had developed a device which could detect breast cancer disease.

Also during the midweek, there was a revelation from the NPP about the return of load shedding should Ghanaians retain the NDC in power.

On Thursday, an Accra High Court struck out a case brought before it by the disqualified Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Party, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.

Facing one of the numerous cases against the Electoral Commission, the Supreme Court ordered it to make collation sheets for Presidential elections available to parties and their agents after the closing of polls.

Outages Due To Maintenance, Not Dumsor ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has allayed fears that country may be falling back into its power crisis days by explaining that the recent wide-spread outages were as a result of scheduled maintenance works on some Bulk Supply Points (BSPs).

At a press conference to clarify the current happenings, the ECG’s Director of Operations, Engineer Tetteh Okine said the maintenance works on BSPs ended this past Sunday with work in Mallam and Baatsona.

“The climax was on the Sunday when we had two challenges. At the Mallam BSP there were challenges and we needed to work on them urgently. When the Mallam BSP goes off, a large area within the western part of Accra to Kasoa, Nsawam; all of them go off.”

“At the same time, we had another challenge and we had to put of the station at Baatsona which the spans the Spintex road and other areas. So it happened that the western part of Accra was off. Some parts in the Eastern were also off,” he added.

Mr. Okine narrated further that the ECG had to change some equipment at Baatsona in order to make sure that it could stabilize supply from the Baatsona station.

Additionally, some of the equipment at the Mallam station was melting so the work had to be done on them he stated.

Mr. Okine’s explanation buttressed an earlier communiqué released which outline that areas that have been affected by these outages include: Weija, Kokrobite, Bortianor, Tokuse, Aplaku, Dunkonaa, Tetegu, McCarthy Hill, Kwashieman, Fadaman, Tabora, Abeka Lapaz, Santa Maria, Mallam, Korlebu, Awoshie, Dansoman, Odorkor, Ablekuma, Asofa, Anyaa , Ofankor and Sowutuom.

The rest are Tantra hills, Amranhia, Mayera, Oduman, Dome , Kasoa, Nsawam, Regimanuel estates, Teshie, Baatsona and all factories and residences on the Spintex road

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwaku Osei Ampofo-Duku, Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander, told journalists in Kumasi that the pair were seized based upon police intelligence.

Dangote Cement To Media: Be Fair And Resolute Against Attacks On Us

Dangote Cement Ghana Limited, has called on the media to be "resolute, fair and balanced" in their reportage at what it perceives as 'price war' rages on in the cement industry.

According to the Head of Communications of the group, Etornam Buame, information gathered indicates that Ghacem is preparing to launch a barrage of attacks in the media against Dangote Cement Ghana and knowing how vital advertisement is to the media, it is likely Ghacem would use blackmail to push through their agenda.

"...our intelligence reveal that Ghacem, in the coming weeks, intends using various media outlets to launch fresh attacks on us (Dangote). In as much as we do know that you depend largely on advertisement to sustain your operations, we believe strongly that the threat of the withdrawal of adverts by Ghacem, if you do not do their bidding, will not intimidate you".

"Remain resolute, fair and balanced in your reportage. That, we trust you will continue to do as part of your contribution to building this country," he admonished.

These revelations come on the heels of what Dangote describes as "smear campaign" by Ghacem in the wake of competitive pricing in the cement in industry in Ghana.

It would be recalled that the Association of Cement Manufacturers in a Daily Guide publication on Thursday, October 20, 2016 clamed Dangote buy a bag of cement in Nigeria at GHc28.9 and sell at GHc27.

Whereas Dangote does not fault Daily Guide for the inaccuracy in the report, "we idea a simple phone call would have revealed that the ex-factory price for a bag of Dangote Cement is GHc29.30 and it has been so for more than six months now".

Mr. Buame further explained that customers are enjoying low prices compared to that of other cement companies due to the fact that Dangote provides free delivery of goods and have "juicy" incentives for bulk purchases.

This, in his view, the other cement companies are not doing and there adds to their price build up and Dangote cannot be "faulted" for that.
