National Security Probes 'Galamsey Queen' (Photo)

National Security operatives are probing the circumstances underpinning the operations of a Chinese Galamsey kingpin and how some security personnel got associated with the lady known as Asia Huang.

Agents of some security agencies were so embroiled in her activities that they soon compromised their integrity allowing for the perpetuation of unauthorised operations in a manner which has been described as worrying by a top security official.

It has come to light that some of the illegalities involved the movement of security persons from Accra to the Ashanti Region on the blind side of the top authorities who should have really authorised such operations.

Sadly the operations were not undertaken to ensure that the laws regarding mining were not breached but rather to make money by compromising their positions.

Daily Guide has learnt that the former National Security official in charge of the Ashanti Region was transferred from the region as a result of some of these glaring aberrations.

Last week a Daily Guide report had it that the Chinese lady had been left off the hook following her earlier arrest for flouting mining laws.

Her activities were said to have degraded vast areas and even caused the death of six children at Gyaman after they had fallen into open pits which were filled with water.

The ongoing investigations in Accra seek to unearth circumstances leading to the release of seized equipment and the extent of involvement of security operatives among other terms of reference.

US, India hold talks to push trade, review regional security

New Delhi, ACCRA, Aug. 30 - (dpa/GNA) - US Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday led talks with the Indian government on boosting trade as well as regional issues including New Delhi's tensions with Pakistan.

Kerry arrived in New Delhi on Monday night from Bangladesh, where the two sides agreed to scale up security cooperation to fight violent extremism.

Kerry and US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker co-chaired trade and security talks with India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Plans to ramp up bilateral trade five-fold to 500 billion dollars were taken up for discussion, US state department officials said.

The talks, set to continue into the evening, also focus on regional security, including Delhi's ties with rival Pakistan amid violence in the disputed region of Kashmir and ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.

Kashmir is at the root of a long-standing conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbours, both of whom claim the area in its entirety.

In recent weeks, more than 70 people, mostly civilians, have died in clashes with the security forces following the killing of a militant leader.

The talks in Delhi come shortly after US and India signed a pact in Washington to share military assets and bases, a move towards consolidating defence ties.

General Manager of Sasso Grabs Most Outstanding Executive Award

In a sector that is highly dominated by the male counterparts, only a few females are able to sail through; with yet still a handful of them matching the males shoulder to shoulder and efficiently managing affairs of reputable organizations in Ghana.

One of such capable women is Mrs. Eunice Ankomaa Apraku Antwi, the General Manager of Samara Company Limited, producers of Sasso Insecticide Spray and Mosquito Coil.

She has been adjudged the ‘Most Outstanding Executive’ in household products at the second edition of the Feminine Ghana Achievement Award ceremony held recently in Accra and organized by The Business Executive Magazine.

The ceremony was held at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra and was attended by dignitaries including the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Nesrin Bayazit; the Zimbabwean Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Mrs. Pavelyn Tendal Musaka; the Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, Maria Alonso; the Colombian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Mrs. Claudia Turbay Quintero, and the Czech Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Margita Fuchsova.

There were also representatives from government.

Mrs. Apraku Antwi’s award comes on the heel of her demonstration of self confidence, professionalism, and passion for her position as General Manager of Sasso which has contributed to the soaring brand of the company in Ghana and its being awarded the ‘Fastest Growing Company’ by government at the 2015 Head of State Award (HOSA).

Her citation reads: “As the General Manager of Samara Group, you have played a key role in the huge success of the Sasso brand of insecticide spray and mosquito coil in the Ghanaian market.

Your resourcefulness, dedication and sense of responsibility have been invaluable in building one of the best known home grown Ghanaian product brands today, and this has made you a role model for rising female executives in the manufacturing sector all around the country.”

The Feminine Ghana Achievement Award seeks to identify and reward outstanding women both in the public and private sectors whose personal and professional conduct have been exemplary but whose accomplishments have not been publicly recognized â€" thus female entrepreneurs, professionals, corporate executives, public institutional managers, diplomats, sportswomen and female traditional rulers.

This award scheme was established to specifically recognize the accomplishment of women on the basis of their gender, and therefore stands out amongst the many generalist awards introduced in Ghana today.

Asked how she feels about the honour, the Sasso female General Manager said the award has come at a time that she least expected, however, it affirms that her services are monitored and are considered worthy of recognition.

“I’m happy about it even though I didn’t expect it. With this award I am confident that I am doing something right to have been nominated first and winning it; I’m sure they might have noticed my ability as a functional key team player,” she said.

Mrs. Apraku Antwi disclosed that she has occupied the General Manager position of Samara Company for three years; and though a very challenging post she dared herself to discharge her duties in ways that would dispel the general notion that ‘such positions are better headed by men’.

As a happy mother of two children, she was full of appreciation to her husband, Mr. Nickson Kwame Antwi, for his immense help in helping her in diverse ways to reach this achievement.

“I am happy to have achieved this feat and I believe in the saying that “what a man can do a woman can do and even better”. I thank God for making it possible and I also thank the Executive Chairman of Samara Company Limited, Dr. Sampson Effah Apraku, for having such great confident in me and giving me the opportunity to give off my best. I shall continue to ensure that Samara remains at the top in Ghana and Africa as a whole”.

“I dedicate this award to my entire team â€" both management and staff of Samara Company â€" whose hard work has played a part in this acknowledgment; and also to my husband, Mr. Nickson Kwame Antwi for his enormous support. I am more determined to balance my interpersonal and decisional role effectively for greater heights in the near future,” an elated Mrs. Antwi emphasized.

Asked what motivational message she has for colleague women in the sector and Ghanaian women as a whole, Eunice said “I want to encourage women to learn to empower each other and use their creativity ability to make their contribution in the production sector successful and to make the world a better place for everyone and also for the unborn generations. Let us guard against hatefulness and envy,” she admonished.

Mrs. Antwi holds a Masters in International Finance from Stafforshire University in the UK after pursing a degree in Marketing at the Central University in Ghana. She is determined to be the best role model to her children, Kayla Apraku Antwi and Kemuel-McCurdy Apraku Antwi.

In all twenty-five (25) professional women were acknowledged and rewarded. Some of them are the CEO of Reroy Cables; the CEO of Sidalco Limited; Deputy Managing Direcor of Prudential Bank, and CEO of Jandel Limited, just to mention a few.

Dont Vote For Reckless Politicians Apostle Opoku Onyinah

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah, has advised members of The Church of Pentecost and the Ghanaian electorate not to vote for reckless politicians seeking their mandate to occupy honourable positions in the country.

He said the electorate must peruse the conducts of politicians aspiring to be elected into public offices before they vote them to occupy public offices.

According to him, any politician who spews reckless statements or promotes disunity among Ghanaian and incites the youth to perpetuate violence to secure political power must be rejected by Ghanaians.

“Such a person doesn’t even deserve the title ‘Honourable,’ you must not give that person your vote; because he or she does not have the wellbeing of the country at heart,” the national chairman advised.

Speaking during the dedication and naming service of James McKeown Memorial Temple at Asamankese in the Eastern Region, the chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Onyinah noted that, this year’s election is crucial to Ghana’s democracy and political stability, hence, advised politicians to refrain from reckless statements that may plunge the country into chaos.

He urged the youth to desist from being used as conduits to execute violence in order to ensure tranquil general election come December 7.

“Voting is a right and a privilege we have as citizens of the country which enables us to assess the performance of a ruling government within the stipulated four years and to choose whether or not to renew its mandate.

“It is, therefore, required of us as citizens to determine the right people to lead us. This should not provide grounds for fighting and conflicts among us.

We must rather learn to tolerate and respect each other’s preferred choice in order to have a quiet election.”

Road Safety Rules Not Applicable To Presidential Motorcades

The Commander of the Motor Traffic Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong has announced that road safety rules are not applicable to presidential motorcades.

According to him, motorcades are free to run at any speed as far as the presidential convoy is concerned. He explained that presidential and high officials’ convoys are permitted by road safety rules to avoid road attackers.

ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong speaking to Onua FM cautioned road users to make way for presidential motorcades to avoid road accidents. He added that anyone who refuses to adhere to warnings of siren from motorcades violates the road safety rules.

“Anyone who follows or joins presidential convoys illegitimately also contravenes the road laws as well,” he underscored.

The MTTD commander’s comments come on the heels of an accident over the weekend involving the convoy of Ghana’s vice president, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur. An unregistered saloon car which failed to heed the signal of the vice president’s motorcade crashed into one of the vehicles at Gomoa Adam, near Esarkyir junction on the Winneba â€" Cape Coast road causing it to sumersault.

At least three occupants including journalists were injured. ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong therefore appealed to the general public to respect the sound of sirens anytime on the road to avoid road accidents.

Bullion Heist: IGP Promotes Heroic Cops

Police Patrol team officers who arrested their colleague officers who were engaged in a bank robbery in the Eastern Region have been promoted.

On 15 August this year, two police officers and a civilian were arrested in connection with an attempted robbery of a GCB Bank bullion van at Maame Krobo in the Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region.

The driver of the van was killed in the incident while a police officer accompanying the van also sustained gun wounds.

Announcing the promotion at his induction ceremony, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr John Kudalor the IGP, condemned the two police officers who were involved in the robbery saying such acts will not be tolerated in the law enforcement body.

He added that measures have been put in place to ensure a calm election come December 7.

“It is gratifying to note that the patrol team that effected the arrest of their colleagues have been promoted effective yesterday to their next ranks. In addition to maintaining general law and order in the country, one cannot lose sight of the fact that we have to also ensure that the December 2016 election will be delivered peacefully and successfully. On that score, I can assure the people of Ghana that we are committed to attaining that feat. With the help of all Ghanaians, we shall overcome,” the IGP stated.

Mr Kudalor called on stakeholders to help the police to make the election violence-free.

“On the part of the police I can say emphatically that adequate preparations have been made. We are set in terms of human resources, logistics and equipment. However, we as police have … [extended an invitation] to our stakeholders namely the Electoral Commission, the political parties, the media, the traditional rulers, the National Commission for Civic Education and the clergy to come on board so that we can do things together”.

Black Schoolgirls In South Africa Told To Straighten Their Hair (Photos)

Pretoria Girls High School is facing a inflamed backlash after instructing black school pupils to straighten their hair. Black school girls claim that they have been subjected to racism and that their blackness has been discouraged. They added that school rules forbid African hairstyles such as afro, Bantu knots, dreadlocks and braids.

#StopRacismAtPretoriaGirlsHigh is currently trending in South Africa. Videos and photos of pupils protesting at the school, one of them sporting an afro, went viral over the weekend

A petition STOP RACISM AT PRETORIA GIRLS HIGH which has over 9,889 signatures so far, has been set up asking the authorities to investigate the school. Part of the petition read:
"Learners at Pretoria High school are demanding that racist practices at the school are brought to an end. Girls attending the school have been forced to straighten their hair; are accused of conspiring when standing in groups and face other intolerable comments and actions"
The Gauteng Department of Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi arrived at Pretoria High School for Girls on Monday to investigate racism allegations by its black learners. He is currently in a meeting with parents, management as well as the school principal Karen Du Toit.

Spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga told DRUM that it is too soon to choose what action will be taken against whom at the school if the girls’ concerns are valid.
"I can’t have a blanket solution for every time there is an outburst of racism at a school because each case is unique," he says. "We want to know what is going on here before we can make a comment"
The girls also claim they are not allowed to speak their mother tongue and that a teacher called them monkeys when they were singing and chanting in class.

Meanwhile, the situation at the school has escalted with political youth movement gathering outside the main gate. Members of SASCO,COSAS, the African National Congress Youth League and Economic Freedom Fighters tried to force their way into the school premises after the school's management barred parents from coming in to fetch their children.

FACT CHECK...NHIS Fully Functional; NPP Campaign Strategy Heavily Bruised!

It’s now confirmed. The National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS is fully functional with many more people subscribing on daily basis.

The scheme, according to separate reports by independent institutions and acclaimed international organizations which have done various works in Ghana’s Health sector, continues to be attractive as a result of new policies introduced by the Mahama Administration and

This is contrary to claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party, NPP which has consistently accused government of incompetence in handling health sector problems resulting in the collapse of the NHIS.

The party for lack of campaign message because of the John Mahama administration’s massive investment in health infrastructure adopted the campaign strategy to counter NDC’s achievement in the health sector.

But President John Mahama and his government have finally been vindicated. This follows revelations by Accra based JOY FM which conducted its own fact check to check political lies and to inform electorates to make right decisions.

The campaign has been part of an agenda to mislead the public to buy into the propaganda that the Mahama administration has failed and is simply incompetent. This has gone on for years in spite of evidence provided by government which was eventually captured in the GREEN BOOK. Last month, July 9, 2016, when the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo Addo campaigned in the Brong Ahafo region, he again raised the issue.

“The Scheme has collapsed. It has been turned upside down. And I am coming to revive the National Health Insurance Scheme, which ensured that the poor in society gained access to healthcare without the financial burden which used to be associated with healthcare delivery (under the cash and carry regime),” he told supporters at Nkrankwanta and Diaba, both in the Dormaa West constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region.

But the NPP lies have been exposed and the party is expected to provide evidence.  The JOY FM news report captured as ‘FACT CHECK’, has really bruised the NPP’s campaign strategy.

In the JOY FM report presented by Raymond Acquah, a careful assessment and research indicated that indeed, utilization or outpatient visits (i.e number of times people accessed Healthcare with the NHIS cards) was 597,000 in 2005. The figure rose to 9.34million in 2008, and over trebled to 29million in 2014, according to statistics by the National Health Insurance Authority.

“Active Membership, that is; the number of card holder or subscribers who either registered on the NHIS or renewed their registration in any particular year to enable them access health care in 2005 was 1.3million. In 2008 the subscriber base shot up to a whopping 11.2million. Again Claims Payment at the close of 2005 was 7.2million cedis. …the report noted.

It added that at the time the KUFUOR led NPP was leaving office in 2009, NHIS claims was about 183million cedis. This shot to 1.07 billion cedis in 2014, an amount that was obviously difficult to raise resulting in the series of threats and suspension of services to NHIS card bearers.

Joy FM's FACT CHECK among other things also confirmed that;

"The average period of receiving card after registration in 2005 was within 3 to 6months. Nothing changed till 2008. First time registrants since 2013, receive their cards instantly, that is, same day of registration and the introduction of the biometric/smart card has reduced corruption”.

It added … “TODAY as many as 30 thousand people are enrolled onto the scheme every single day. Averagely 35 new applications are received from healthcare facilities monthly across the country wanting to join the scheme as service providers. And the NHIS has 4,600 healthcare facilities licensed to provide service to NHIS members across the country. These are made up of government, mission and private facilities while an average of zero facilities leave or stop providing service under the scheme in a month. And patients covered by the Scheme are covered by 517 different formulations of medicines on the NHIS medicines list”.

Though the Minority in Parliament is fully aware of the achievements and developments from various presentations by the Health and Finance Ministers, they equally joined the diabolic agenda.

The chorus always intensified when payments to service providers delayed ignoring the implication of media discussions fuelled by their lies.

Nana Akufo Addo and the NPP have also forgotten the negative signal affected prospective card bearers and patients who must have abandoned renewals or registering for the first time because of the untrue claims.

Pope Francis to visit Italy towns devastated by earthquake

VATICAN CITY, ACCRA, Aug. 30 - (UPI/GNA) - Pope Francis said he will visit the Italian towns decimated by last week's 6.2-magnitude earthquake that killed at least 290 people.

"Dear brothers and sisters, I hope to come visit you as soon as possible so I can personally bring you the comfort of faith and the support of Christian hope," Francis said while speaking to worshippers Sunday in Vatican City's St. Peter's Square. "I hope to come and see you, to bring you the comfort of faith, the tenderness of a father and a brother."

Thousands of people were injured and left homeless after the earthquake on Wednesday, which generated powerful aftershocks that hampered search and rescue efforts.

"I think of the people of Accumoli, Amatrice, Arquata, Pescara del Tronto, Norcia," Francis said, naming the towns worst-hit by the earthquake.

Authorities have launched a criminal investigation to ascertain why buildings that were supposed to be reinforced collapsed during the earthquake.

Prosecutors are particularly focusing on why a school and a church bell tower collapsed. Both had been reinforced previously to withstand earthquakes. When the bell tower of Accumoli church fell, it killed a family of four.

Francis said he expressed his "spiritual closeness" to the victims and said the Catholic Church "shares their suffering and their concerns."

Sergio Pirozzo, mayor of the town of Amatrice, said news of the pope's visit gives "great comfort."

We Will Rid Service Of Errant Cops - IGP

Mr John Kudalor, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of the Ghana Police Service has reassured Ghanaians that the Police Administration would not relent on its efforts to rid the service of men who bring the name of the service into disrepute.

“The act of Police Officers using the authority conferred on them by law to commit acts of criminality is as unfortunate as it is reprehensible,” he stressed.

The IGP made these remarks at his official induction ceremony held yesterday in Accra.

According to him, the Police Administration is committed to achieving a Police Service that is comparable to best practices anywhere in the world, hence will not tolerate any act that derails its objective.

He held that leaving behind a high quality professional Police Service that is valued and commands trust and confidence of the citizenry is his greatest hope and objective.

Commending his predecessors, Mr Kudalor noted that without their contributions the Service would not be where it is despite the few challenges.

Speaking about initiatives he has put in place since he took office November 10 last year, Mr Kudalor stated that to improve the service, Thursdays have been put aside for any officer to walk into his office and make contributions or share a concern with him.

Also, he stated that the Police Administration has introduced the use of camouflage uniform, and also increased the number of uniforms or apparels worn by personnel.

“This is aimed at boosting the morale of the men of the Service, and also improving their turn-out, as it engenders confidence,” he added.

He also mentioned that the National Patrol Department (Visibility Patrol Unit) has been upgraded to the next level and equipped with the requisite logistics and equipment to be able to discharge their duties more efficiently and effectively.

The IGP charged all police personnel to live up to the mandate given to them to protect lives and property and not kill the trust reposed in them.

Mr Kudalor seized the opportunity to assure the entire Ghanaian public that the police would to its best to ensure that the peace of the country is not disrupted before, during and after the upcoming December polls.

In a related development, the IGP announced that the four officers who arrested their colleagues in the Afram Plains bullion van scandal have been promoted to their next ranks.

The promoted officers are Sergeant Sulemana Abukari who has been promoted to the rank of Inspector, Constable Frederick Addai has been moved to the rank of Corporal, Constable Kerry Kwaku Gabienu has been promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal and Constable Eric Webo has also been promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.

Revealed!: Two Suspected Police Armed Robbers In GCB Bullion Van Attack Were Aided To Escape

The two Police suspected armed robbers who escaped while being transported after their recent botched armed robbery attack at Donkorkrom in the Eastern Region, have revealed that they were aided to remove the handcuffs by their colleague, Corporal Christopher Babudu who was escorting them.

Two Police officers who were arrested in connection with an attempted robbery attack on GCB bullion in which the driver was killed escaped from Police custody while they were being sent to the Eastern Regional Police Command in Kororidua for questioning.

The duo upon reaching Nkawkaw reportedly asked the driver to stop and allow them to urinate and in the process absconded. News of their escape angered residents of Donkorkrom who took the law into their own hands and took to the streets vandalized property including burning down the police station.

The police mounted a manhunt for the escapees and subsequently arrested them.

Appearing before the Mpraeso Circuit Court in the Eastern Region on Monday, the two ‘criminal’ police officers told the Presiding Judge Miriam Solace Sinare that Corporal  Christopher Babudu, used a key to open the handcuffs for them hence they are not guilty of the escaping from lawful custody charge.

Agoo FM’s Abena Pokua reported that  Corporal  Christopher Babudu explained he was unable to shoot the suspects while they were escaping because he didn’t want to shoot an innocent percent in the process as there were lots of people around the scene.

The Armed robbers a fortnight ago attacked a GCB Bank bullion van at Maame Krobo killing the driver instantly with a police officer who was escorting the van sustaining gunshot wounds. They however failed to flee with their booty.

Lawyer Sues A-G; Seeks To Reverse Remission Of Sentences of Montie 3

A Sunyani-based legal practitioner has brought a suit against the Attorney-General questioning the legality of the president’s decision to remit the sentence of the Montie 3.

Mr. Alfred Tuah Yeboah is praying the Supreme Court for a declaration that upon a true and proper interpretation of Article 72 of the 1992 Constitution, the president’s power of prerogative of mercy “is limited to convictions ‘for criminal offences’ and does not include convictions for contempt arising from the inherent jurisdiction of the court…”

The Highest Court of the land in July this year found three pro-government radio commentators guilty of contempt of court on their own plea.

Salifu Maase, a radio host of pro-NDC Montie FM, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn were sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for scandalizing the court.

They were also fined 10,000 cedis each.

After serving one month of the prison sentence, President John Mahama remitted the remainder of their sentence, exercising his powers under Article 72 of the Constitution.

The Article says:

(1) The President may, acting in consultation with the Council of State-

(a) grant to a person convicted of an offence a pardon either free or subject to lawful conditions; or

(b) grant to a person a respite, either indefinite or for a specified period, from the execution of punishment imposed on him for an offence; or

(c) substitute a less severe form of punishment for a punishment imposed on a person for an offence; or

(d) remit the whole or part of a punishment imposed on a person or of a penalty or forfeiture otherwise due to Government on account on any offence.

A statement signed by Communications Minister, Edward Omane Boamah said, "The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has, in consultation with the Council of State and in exercise of his constitutional powers under Article 72 of the Constitution, remitted the remaining prison sentence imposed on three persons: Salifu Maase (alias Mugabe), Alistair Nelson and Ako Gunn who were sentenced to 4 months imprisonment and a good of GH¢10,000.00 each for contempt of court. The remission is effective 26th August 2016.

But the legality of the exercise of this power is now being challenged at the Supreme Court which has the power interpret the Constitution and to decide the constitutionality or otherwise of actions of state agencies and individuals, given specific powers under the constitution.

Mr. Tuah Yeboah argues that if at all the president could exercise his power of prerogative of mercy, it was limited to convictions arising out of contempt proceedings initiated by the Attorney-General.

He wants a “Declaration that the grant of remission of the sentence to Godwin Ako Gunn, Alistair Nelson and Salifu Maase alias Mugabe who were sentenced to four (4) months’ imprisonment by the Court for contempt is contrary to Article 72 and 296(c) of the 1992 Constitution and is, therefore, void and of no legal effect.”

Last, he wants an order reversing the remission of the sentences which was granted the three.

UPI/CVoter poll: Hillary Clinton regains lead over Donald Trump

WASHINGTON, ACCRA, Aug. 30 - (UPI/GNA) - The UPI/CVoter daily presidential tracking poll released Monday shows Hillary Clinton retaking her lead over Donald Trump.

Through polling as of Saturday, Clinton is ahead by slightly more than 3 points, 49.91 percent to 46.90, with 3.19 percent of the respondents choosing "others." "Others" in the poll are defined as respondents who decline to pick either Clinton or Trump.

On Tuesday, Trump took his first lead since July 30. He led by less than 1 percentage point for two days, then Clinton led on Thursday by around half a point (48.95 percent to 48.33 percent). Trump regained a slight lead on Friday (48.62 percent to 48.48 percent.)

At nearly 50 percent, Clinton's percentage is the best since Aug. 16 at 50.84, which was her highest in one month of polling.

Those selecting "others" are near the lowest since Aug. 14

The UPI/CVoter online tracking poll surveys about 200 people each day, leading to a sample size of roughly 1,400 people during any seven-day span. It has ranged from 16.85 percent on July 16 to 2.90 on Friday.

Because the poll is conducted online and individuals self-select to participate, a margin of error cannot be calculated. The poll has a credibility interval of 3 percentage points. This seven-day span includes data collected from Aug 21-27, when 1,682 individuals were surveyed. Of them, 1,157 identified themselves as likely voters.

3 Arrested For Attacking Forex Bureau

Three men who allegedly attacked a customer at a forex bureau at Nungua in Accra have been busted.
The suspects, who were arrested with weapons, including two pistols, a shotgun and a pump action gun, are said to be behind two other robbery attacks on the Cocoa Palace Lodge and a company near the Nungua Senior High School.

Their names were given by the police as Stephen Bediako, 30; Kwaku Nuworpeh, 35, and Abass Fuseini, 23.

They are said to have laid ambush near the Cosmos Forex Bureau where they attacked the victim.

Briefing journalists in Accra, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Timothy Yoosa Bonga, said the gang, who had information about their victim, laid ambush for him at the forex bureau.

He said soon after the victim arrived at the forex bureau, the gang attacked him at gunpoint and ordered him to hand over all the money in his possession, as well as his mobile phone and two laptops.

He said when the victim resisted, the suspects subjected him to severe beatings and threats before taking his possessions.

Mr Bonga said the victim raised an alarm when his attackers left him to his fate and fled the scene with their booty.  The alarm attracted some residents of the area, who pursued the suspects as they fled into a bush nearby.

He said the police, who had received a distress call, arrived on the scene and, with the support of some residents, arrested the suspects who were hiding in the bush near the Manna Mission Hospital at Nungua.

When the police searched the suspects, he said, they retrieved the weapons, 13 rounds of live cartridges and a sack containing GHc4,388.

During investigations, he said, the police found out that the three suspects and another member of the gang who is currently on the run had attacked a company known as Time Being Enterprise on July 30, 2016, during which they made away with GH¢11,000 and two mobile phones.

He said the gang had, on August 13, 2016, attacked the Cocoa Palace Lodge near the Beach Road where they robbed their victims of a laptop, five mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.

Justice Dery Threatens To Drag GJA To Court

A justice of the High Court, Mr Justice Paul Uuter Dery, who is on suspension for alleged corruption, is contemplating filing a suit against the awards committee of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for honouring the ace investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
But Anas, in an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic, said Justice Dery was entitled to exercise his rights under the 1992 Constitution.

The GJA last Saturday, August 27, 2016, for the second time, crowned Anas with the GJA’s topmost honour. He has so far won four awards for being the best in Investigative Journalism.

But the lawyer for Justice Dery, Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo, is not happy with the turn of events, considering the fact that a case challenging the capacity of Anas’s investigative agency will be decided at the Supreme Court on October 27, 2016.

According to counsel, his client was considering citing Anas and the GJA’s Awards Committee for contempt of court “because the award prejudices the outcome of ongoing court proceedings which are challenging the legality of the enterprise undertaken by Tiger Eye PI and Anas”.

Counsel said he was investigating the circumstances leading to the award.

He said his client would then choose whether or not to cite the GJA for contempt after investigations.

Justice Dery and two others, through their lawyer, had, in February 2016, filed a writ invoking the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to declare, among other issues, that Tiger Eye PI did not have legal capacity to file a petition against them.

The other applicants are Justices Mustapha Habib Logoh and Gilbert Ayisi Addo, while the respondents in the case are Tiger Eye PI, the Chief Justice and the Attorney-General.

The three filed the suit after they were suspended for allegedly taking bribes. The acts were captured on video by Anas and his team.

Anas’s investigations led to the dismissal of more than 20 judges, while more than 80 members of staff of the Judicial Service are being investigated.

Justice Dery’s concern stems from the belief that Anas was rewarded for his work on the judicial scandal which, according to his lawyer, was prejudicial on the grounds that the issues were yet to be determined by the court.

The reliefs being sought are a declaration that the petitions that the Tiger Eye PI filed with the President of Ghana for the removal of the plaintiffs as justices of the Superior Court were inconsistent with and in contravention of Article 146(3) of the 1992 Constitution, as the first defendant lacked legal capacity to file the said petitions.

They are also seeking a declaration that the President’s referral of Tiger Eye PI’s petitions to the Chief Justice to decide whether there was a prima facie case against the plaintiffs is inconsistent with and in contravention of Article 146(3) of the 1992 Constitution, as Tiger Eye PI lacked the legal capacity to file the said petitions.

Another relief being sought is a declaration that the Chief Justice’s request that Justices Logoh and Dery respond to the petitions filed by Tiger Eye PI for the determination of whether there was a prima facie case against them is inconsistent with and in contravention of Article 146(3) of the 1992 Constitution, as Tiger Eye PI lacked the legal capacity to file the said petitions.

Journalists Urged To Maintain Professionalism In Electoral Reporting

Mrs Charlotte Osei, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has asked journalists to maintain high ethical standards and professionalism in reporting the electoral process to promote quiet presidential and parliamentary polls in December.

She reminded media practitioners to allow the core principles of journalism to guide their work and eschew reports borne out of speculation and rumour which could provoke unnecessary tension and chaos as the polls draw near.

Mrs Osei, who was the Guest Speaker at the 21st Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards on Saturday, echoed the power of the media in influencing public decisions.

The awards ceremony was held on the theme: “Media for Undisputed and Peaceful 2016 Elections: The Support of Civil Society.”

While expressing confidence in the Commission’s preparedness to organise another successful and calm elections, she called for collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to help the course.

She said journalists should always be guided by the tenets of accuracy, balance and truth as well as stick to the facts of their reports, reiterating that; “do not base your reportage on mere speculations, check everything you report on the electoral exercise for accuracy,” Mrs Osei said.

She noted that failure of the media to “report accurately may create the condition for disputed electoral outcome without basis.”

“As a nation we don’t need that, so I’m pleading for a return to first principles; the principles and ethical values that make journalism a profession worthy of our respect and the protections which our Constitution provides journalists,” Mrs Osei said.

An investigative journalist, Mr Anas Aremeyaw Anas, won the GJA Journalist of the Year 2015 Award. He took home a Hyundai SUV plus a certificate and a plaque.

Bonded unemployed nurses threaten to picket at Health Ministry, Wednesday

Aggrieved registered General nurses of the Holy Family Nurses Training College, Nkawkaw are threatening to picket at the Health Ministry in protest over delays in posting them to the various health institutions.

The nurses numbering about 82 completed the nursing training course in 2014 and were bonded throughout their national service with a promise to post them immediately after service.

However on completion of their service in March 2016, the Ministry has failed to post them despite posting other nurses from other training institutions.

The Nurses told the Nurses and Midwifery Council, the institution charged with the mandate to provide the list of institutions whose students will be financially cleared mistakenly took the Training College out of the list.

One of the students who wants to remain anonymous said they had to prompt the Council for them to add the Holy Family Nurses Training College to the list after which they were promised to be posted in three weeks after the clearance.

It has been three months now and nothing positive has come from the Health Ministry.

"We sent a petition to them twice and didn't hear anything from them. We also went on a demonstration on August 10," one of the aggrieved nurses disclosed to

She said "we have still not heard anything from the Ministry. All our colleagues who completed other institutions started working in June. We are the only school which was left out and are home now.

"We have a signed a five year bond with the government of Ghana," she added.

But the Public Relations Officer of the Nurses and Midwifery Council Nana Boateng Agyemang in an interview with denied claims that the Council omitted that name of Holy Family Training College from the list to the Finance Ministry.

He said the Finance Ministry is still working on the financial clearance for the affected nurses but cannot tell when the Ministry will be done with it.

The Public Relations Officer of the Health Ministry Tony Goodman also conceded the posting of the nurses has delayed but said the Finance Ministry is still working on the financial clearance for the nurses.

Even though he admits that the nurses to patient ratio is 1: 800, which calls for more nurses to be employed and posted to the various health institutions, he said the ministry has to look at the cost implications as well as other priorities which have to be catered for.

Commenting on the picketing, he said it is the right of the nurses to demonstrate but advised them not to put pressure on the ministry.

He assured the Ministry will soon give the affected nurses financial clearance but stopped shot of giving a timeline.

"I am not a politician to give a time line," he said

It Was Not Done For Votes...The Farm Is Mine - Karbo

Anthony Karbo was seen seriously weeding at a farm believed to be in his constituency.

Karbo is also the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Lawra Constituency of the Upper West Region and is intimately related to the chief of the area.

He took to his facebook page and wrote: “Farm time….this is who we are..#peasantfarming!”

His opponents have taken to facebook to mock him, saying he is working on people’s farmland for votes.

But Mr Karbo said the farm is his and that he has been farming since 2012.

According to him, he cultivates groundnut, maize and rears some livestock.

“I have been a farmer for the past years and that is what my opponents are not aware of . It is what I love to do and so I am not perturbed that the NDC is talking about me,” he asserted.

He indicated that he does not benefit directly from the proceeds of his farm because he distributes it to widows, the aged and the poor in his community who do not have the capacity to go out and till the lands.

“I farm to feed Ghanaians and the poor and it is not something I directly benefit from. Those who think that it is being done for election purposes or for votes can continue to mock and laugh but I am not doing it for votes,” he added.

Gang-Rape: India Tells Female Tourists NOT To Wear Skirts

Female tourists should not wear skirts or walk alone at night 'for their own safety' in India's small towns and cities, the country's tourism minister said.

Mahesh Sharma was discussing tourist security in the north Indian city of Agra, site of the Taj Mahal.

He said foreign arrivals to India were issued a welcome kit that included safety advice for women.

He said: 'In that kit they are given dos and don'ts.

'These are very small things like, they should not venture out alone at night in small places, or wear skirts, and they should click the photo of the vehicle number plate whenever they travel and send it to friends.'

He added: 'For their own safety, women foreign tourists should not wear short dresses and skirts... Indian culture is different from the western.'

The welcome kit is among a number of measures introduced to address declining rates of female tourism in India after the high-profile gang-rape and murder of a Delhi medical student in 2012, and a number of subsequent attacks on female tourists.

Water Crisis Looms In Western Region

Residents in Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis and its adjourning towns in the Western Region would have to brace themselves for a looming water crisis predicted by the Water Ministry to hit the region by close of December 2016.

According to a director at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the ministry through the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) will by close of December 2016, shut down the Daboase Water Treatment Plant which supplies treated water to the people of the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.

Today’s checks at the national offices of GWCL indicated that the closure of the Daboase Treatment Plant has become imminent due to activities of illegal mining in the Pra River which is the main source of raw water that feeds the plant.

Today further learnt that the level of pollution of the Pra River by activities of galamsey (illegal mining) operators have reached a crescendo which, if not checked, will permanently ground the plant.

“We are currently monitoring to see whether to shut it down even before the December deadline just to prevent it from total collapse,” an engineer reiterated.

He noted that the pumps were made to treat water-temerity level of 200 units, but currently the temerity level of the Pra River was as high as 3,800 units.

Train Police to Protect Journalists Safety, Stop Violent Extremism MFWA

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has recommended training for police and other security forces that is focused on protecting the safety of journalists, as part of efforts to prevent violent extremism (PVE) and countering violent extremism (CVE).

The MFWA also called for accountability, particularly prosecutions, for crimes against journalists in order to enable journalists to feel safe about reporting on sensitive topics, including violent extremism.

These recommendations were part of the MFWA’s submission to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ (OHCHR) in line with the UN organ’s compilation of best practices and lessons on how upholding human rights can contribute to PVE and CVE.

The submission expressed great concern that police and other security forces regularly violate the right to freedom of expression especially press freedom rights. The persistence of crimes against journalists, impunity and acts of censorship preventsâ€"even precludesâ€"the media from performing its duty as a provider of information. For example, in Nigeria last year, the military attacked the media for reporting on the role of international assistance in Nigeria’s CVE strategy against Boko Haram. The attack led to widespread self-censorship among the media with regard to reportage on the anti-Boko Haram war.

The MFWA made five major recommendations to the OHCHR:

- PVE and CVE strategists should understand the promotion of freedom of expression, including press freedom, as more than just a tool of PVE and CVE programming and efforts.

- Police and other security forces must receive human rights training, particularly on the need to respect and protect freedom of expression, including press freedom, and the safety of journalists.

- States should take steps to end impunity for crimes against journalists and the media generally. The lack of accountability, particularly prosecutions, for crimes against journalists creates a culture of impunity, facilitates future attacks and pushes journalists to self-censor on a range of topics, including violent extremism.

- States should build the capacity of journalists and the media to report on issues related to violent extremism, which entails creating an enabling environment for the media to perform its functions.

- The media must behave with increased professionalism, which will facilitate its ability to help and educate the public on PVE and CVE programming and efforts.

Nigerian Sets Wife, Children Ablaze Over Property

A 43-year-old teacher, Gbemisola Edward, and her 11-year-old daughter, Dolapo, have been confirmed dead at an Ogun State hospital after suffering from severe burns.

The woman’s husband, Joshua, was said to have poured petrol on her, their daughter, and his seven-year-old son, Samson, and set fire on them.

PUNCH Metro learnt the incident happened on Thursday on Augustine Street, Ire Akari Estate, in the Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, after a disagreement between the couple.

Gbemisola’s son, Joshua Babatunde, 16, who escaped by a whisker, said his stepfather had wanted his mother to sell their three-bedroomed apartment, but she refused.

He said, “It was the scream of my mother that woke me up. Dolapo and Samson were also set ablaze. I wanted to put out the fire when my stepfather poured petrol on me as well. Before he returned with matches, I managed to escape and reported at the Ifo Police Station.

“He was working with a factory but was sacked some months ago. He then told my mother to sell the house so that he could use the money to commence a business. But my mother said she would never sell the house she struggled to build.

“We moved into the house in January. The following month, he and Samson started living with us. It was a woman at our former residence in Iyana Ipaja (Lagos State) that bore Samson for him. He used to beat mum while we were in Iyana Ipaja.”

PUNCH Metro gathered that Joshua fled immediately the incident happened, while the victims were admitted to Aron Hospital, a private facility in the area.

Dolapo was said to have died a few minutes after she got to the hospital while the mother died on Friday.

Samson, who has burns in the head, hands and legs, is still responding to treatment.

Gbemisola’s brother, Wale, said she had always been abused by the husband, adding that constant beatings forced her to relocate from Iyana Ipaja to Ifo.

He said, “Their relationship had been fraught with quarrels since when he was living with my sister in our house at Iyana Ipaja. There was a time he threatened to kill her with a machete. He stole her money and fled.

“When he knew my sister had built a house, he went there to reconcile with her. She insisted that they needed to go to the registry which they did in February. I visited my sister two weeks ago. She said her husband had been threatening her again and that she had told him to leave by the end of August.

“It was on Thursday afternoon that I got a call that he set her and the children ablaze.”

Woman Dies At Hajj Village

A woman died yesterday at the Hajj Village after a fall in the bath house where she had gone to wash up.

According to the Deputy Head of the Communications Bureau of the Pilgrims Affairs Office, Ghana (PAOG) Amin Lamptey, the woman had accompanied a pilgrim from Kumasi who fortunately was part of the passengers aboard the ninth batch of pilgrims to be airlifted to Madina.

A release he sent out yesterday read “the entire Hajj Village was in state of shock this morning when a woman by the name, Rukaiya from Kumasi New Town passed away when she was preparing to travel back to Kumasi after one of her relatives succeeded in travelling with the 9th flight which took off at 5:10am this morning (yesterday) and landed this afternoon (yesterday) in Madina.”

The deceased, he went on, visited  the washroom to clean herself up  for a possible journey back to Kumasi when she slipped and fell in the process. “She was pronounced dead by our Medical Officers on duty on their way to the hospital,” he said.
Some of her relatives who came along with her from Kumasi, he said “quickly conveyed the body to Kumasi for burial yesterday.”

In another development, the Chairman of the PAOG, Alhaji Tanko Abdul Rauf Ibrahim has confirmed to the DAILY GUIDE that nine underage persons have been deported from Saudi Arabia having traveled by one of the earlier flights.

It is being speculated that the teenagers were being sent to Saudi Arabia to stay on and join the teeming number of illegal immigrants in that country. The Saudi authorities knowing this trick appear to have mounted a special lookout for such persons and are quick to return them.

The many Ghanaian Muslim illegal immigrants live undignified life in shanty areas of Mecca. They are usually hunted by Saudi immigration officials. They are unable to access hospital facilities fearing they could be arrested and deported for not possessing stay papers.

Some Ghanaian Pastors Smoke Weed And Booze - Prophet Amponsah

Controversial man of God and Founder and Leader of Hope Generation International Ministries, Prophet Eric Owusu Amponsah affectionately called ‘computer man', is alleging that some religious leaders in Ghana have gained notoriety in smoking weed and drinking alcohol.

He believes the consumption of these hard drugs, informs the weird behavior of some pastors in recent times which has become a source of embarrassment to the upright ones who are committed to pursue the calling of Jesus Christ.

On Koforidua-based Bryte Fm, he bemoaned the worrying trend and warned such pastors to either reform from their evil ways or incur the wrath of God.

“Some pastors are known for taking alcohol laced “wee” in their offices and cars before standing in front of their congregation to preach” He alleged.

According to him, pastors under the influence of these substances become illusionists giving untrue prophecies to the unsuspecting congregants who have overly become gullible.

He has therefore cautioned Christians especially women not to allow themselves to be deceived by such self-acclaimed pastors who are just on a mission to gain wealth.

Montie 3 could head back to prison if...

The three contemnors enjoying the air of freedom following a presidential intervention may be heading back to prison if a case challenging the president's power of remission is upheld.

A private legal practitioner Mr. Alfred Tuah Yeboah told Joy News he is not only seeking an interpretation of Article 72 which formed the basis of the presidential remission but he is also seeking consequential orders, which if granted, will have Salifu Maase, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako-Gunn return to finish their four month jail term.

The three contemnors who are sympathisers of the governing National Democratic Congress served just a month of the jail term and were pardoned by president who acted on the advice of the Council of State.

They were convicted for scandalising the court and bringing the name of the court into disrepute. The three, had taken turns on an Accra based radio station Montie FM, with a threat to kill judges who sat on a case brought against the Electoral Commission.

They also threatened to rape the Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood if the judges gave a judgement which was not in the favour of the EC.

Their comments were roundly condemned and later hauled before the Supreme Court judges to explain why they should not be found guilty for contempt.

They pleaded guilty to the charge of contempt and were handed a four month jail term as well as a fine of ¢10,000.00.

Whilst serving their term, supporters of the governing party, ministers of state began a petition signing campaign to have the president activate his powers of mercy under Article 72 and have the four month sentence of the contemnors remitted.

The president acceded to the call of the petitioners and granted remission of sentence.

Mr. Alfred Tuah Yeboah believes the president's decision may be unconstitutional and wants the Supreme Court judges to have a final say on the matter.

He dismissed assertions that the judges are interested parties in the matter and may give a prejudiced verdict. He said even if someone sues the Chief Justice, she still has the power under the law to empanel the judges to sit on her case.

Reacting to the substantive matter, the private legal practitioner said even if the president has power under Article 72 to take the decision he took, the same constitution under Article 296 prescribed how the president ought to have exercised that power of discretion.

The article states (a) that discretionary power shall be deemed to imply a duty to be fair and candid; (b) the exercise of the discretionary power shall not be arbitrary, capricious or biased wither by resentment, prejudice or personal dislike and shall be in accordance with due process of law.

He does not believe the president followed due process in arriving at the decision to grant remission to the Montie 3.

He argued further that he will be seeking an interpretation from the judges whether there is a difference between criminal contempt and other offences prosecutable by the Attorney General.

If there is a difference, he believed the president would have erred in activating his powers of mercy under Article 72 which ordinarily applies only for offences under the criminal code and prosecutable by the Attorney General.

But another lawyer Victor Adawudu insists the president did not err in taking the decision he took.

He stated that the constitution gave powers and different functions to all the three arms of government.

The judges performed their function and the president has done same, Victor Adawudu maintained.

He added the president consulted the Council of State as stipulated under Article 72 and did act whimsically.

Women Must Treat Breast Cancer As A Hospital Disease, Urges Dr. Wiafe

Women with suspected cases of breast cancer have been advised to promptly report the condition to hospitals first, for diagnosis and treatment.

Speaking to the media in Akwatia after a free breast cancer screening program, the President of Breast Care International, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, also encouraged religious leaders and traditional herbal medicine practitioners to join the campaign against breast cancer by referring women who report to them with suspected  cases to hospitals, rather.

Dr. Wiafe, also the CEO  of the Peace and Love Hospitals, who deplored the recourse to herbal preparations and prayer camps by some patients , however,  did not discount the power of prayer, but said prayer is rather complementary to orthodox medical treatment.

Recalling numerous personal experiences and hospital records, Dr. Wiafe said if herbalists and religious leaders assist in this direction, many patients would be saved from needless emotional and financial challenges, and in some extreme cases, death.

“ we are encouraging patients and relatives to see hospitals as the first point of call in all cases of breast cancer. As has been the practice, relatives rather hurry to hospitals after failed attempts elsewhere, burdening hospitals with complications and expecting miracles overnight.” She lamented.

The recourse to unapproved methods of treatment, according to her, poses a real threat to life, saying “it is about time education was intensified for the understanding of the public that breast cancer cannot be treated through any means apart from orthodox medicine”.

The screening at the Akwatia Bethel Presbyterian church was highly patronized, with breast cancer survivors sharing personal experiences of how they have survived the disease and remained healthy and productive , years after treatment.

The leader of the Akwatia Bethel Presbyterian women’s association, Madam Agnes Akwa, was full of praise for the selfless work of BCI, and associated herself with the pre-screening education by Dr. Wiafe, to the extent that women should regularly carry out their own breast self- examination and promptly report any abnormality in the breast first to hospital for treatment, insisting, early detection, and prompt action, is equal to prevention.

The congregation was also screened for hypertension and diabetes. The BCI team took the opportunity to create awareness about some non-communicable diseases, and the need for people to go for regular medical check-up.

Central Region Nears 78% Potable Water Coverage - Minister

Supply of potable water in the Central Region is expected to hit 78 per cent average by December 2016, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing has said.

The Abrem Agona Water Project in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality, when completed, would solve the perennial water shortage faced by residents in some parts of the region.

The current regional water coverage stands at 68 per cent.

The Minister made this known when he paid a working visit to the Brimsu Water Dam and the Abrem Agona Water Project currently under construction to assess progress of work on the project.

The project, which is expected to benefit more than 400,000 people in the Cape Coast Metropolis and its surrounding communities, would primarily inter-connect the two water systems at Sekyere Hemang and Brimsu.

About 3.1 million gallons of treated water from Sekyere Hemang would be supplied to the two water wells at Abrem Agona and subsequently made available to areas with supply from the Brimsu head works.

Works on the water supply project, which is being undertaken with help from the Netherlands Government under its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme, was likely be completed ahead of schedule in December.

Interacting with the media after his visit, Dr Agyemang-Mensah said water supply for the Cape Coast Metropolis and the neighbouring KEEA Municipality improved after completion of the 6.6 million gallons daily capacity water treatment plant at Sekyere Hemang.

He, however, said during the dry season when the level of water in the Brimsu Dam was low, Cape Coast and its neighbouring communities experienced acute water shortage.

He said the Government was committed to investing in water infrastructure to ensure access to potable water for all Ghanaians by 2025 through some interventions put in place.

Dr Agyemang-Mensah also visited the Kwamoano/Amarkrom and Nyinabontoa water supply system, a sustainable rural water and sanitation project, which was commissioned last year with a nine-member management team.

Aside the water supply system, government has also constructed 18 boreholes in 18 communities in the Hemang Lower Denkyira District in a bid to address the water problems there.
