Woman Declares She is Tired of Being a Ghanaian

I am 31 years old and I’ve always been proud to be a Ghanaian—until the last few weeks. At the moment, I feel being a Ghanaian is a curse and I wish I can relocate or just be offered an alternative.

I’ve come to realize that there, there is no political saviour out there—be it NPP or NDC. All the political parties are the same and will continue to make living conditions worse for ordinary citizens like me.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, hosted by Captain Smart, on Monday March 24, 2014, Anita Desooso dismissed such allegations, saying they were laughable.

“It’s not true. Nana Addo is not my boyfriend. In fact it cannot be possible because there is no space, I’m already occupied. Nana is just a friend” she asserted.

Government Gives Away Oil Blocks

THE AFRICA Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has expressed worry over the rate at which Government is throwing out promising oil blocks to relatively inexperienced oil companies.

The policy think-tank stated that such contracts were being awarded on the blind side of Ghanaians, the primary owners of Ghana’s oil and gas resources.

At the weekend, Parliament approved two new oil contracts under a certificate of urgency. The contracts, which were approved by Parliament, were laid before the House on 27th February 2014.

In a statement issued Friday in Accra, ACEP said the contracts were approved less than six hours after the notice of the motion for the approval was given.

“This contradicts Parliament’s own Standing Order 80(1) which provides that a motion can be moved after 48 hours have elapsed from the time of notice.”

Banks which fail to upgrade their ATM software will become targets for hackers, GhIPSS has indicated.

“On April 8, Microsoft will cut off its technical support for Windows XP and will no longer issue security updates to patch holes in Windows XP, leaving those ATMs exposed to a new kind of cyber attacks,” said a statement issued by GhIPSS.

Gas project won’t end energy crisis

Contrary to high expectations that the yet- to-be commissioned gas infrastructure project at Atuabo in the Western Region would bring an end to the country’s surging energy crises, experts have expressed other views.

The revelation is expected to generate a lot of debate and throw the hopes of the masses out of gear because of the heavy anticipation of the people.

For instance, the Executive Director of KITE, a non-profit development organisation and leading actor in the energy, technology and environmental sector in Ghana, Mr Ishmael Edjekumhene, said the project would only provide a cheaper source of fuel to produce energy.

“The reason why am so convinced that it is not going to change anything apart from the bottom line, helping us get a cheaper source of fuel is the fact that, looking at the design of the plant, the gas is going straight to Aboadze, it is not even going to be fed into the West Africa Gas Pipeline,” he told the GRAPHIC BUSINESS in an interview on March 20, 2014.

PlayStation 4's virtual reality headset, Project Morpheus

Project Morpheus, right now, is a little uncomfortable. In so many words, it feels like a prototype still. As a demo man fit the headset on my generously sized noggin, he tightened a variety of different adjustments: one that tightened the whole unit on my head, another that brought the display portion forward toward my eyes. When you initially put it on, there's a gap between where you're looking and below -- certainly not a great way to create immersion. Thankfully, that gap closed easily in the two different demos we tried (The Deep and The Castle -- both of which were more tech demo than game).

I'd love to say it was a sweat-free experience; between gesticulating with PlayStation Move controllers as hands and being surrounded by hundreds of GDC attendees waiting for their chance to try Morpheus, I was relatively moist by the time I'd cut up the dummy model in The Castle with a virtual sword. While uncomfortable, I can get over that -- the issue is that it makes the optics fog up and that's no good at all. Part of the unit's design is based around keeping players cool, so you should expect a better experience as Morpheus goes from prototype to reality.

Chiefs Frustrated by Activities of Oil Companies

Chiefs in the Western Region have expressed frustration with the activities of oil companies, saying their source of livelihood, fishing, is being destroyed.

At meeting with president mahama, the Chiefs, said the discovery of oil with its attendant drilling activity is making life unbearable for the fishing folks in the region.

The Vice President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Akwasi Agyemang IX, told President Mahama the fishermen no longer catch enough fish when they go fishing.

“The marine environment, most especially with regard to the oil and gas, is our worry and also the poverty level and the living condition of our fishing communities is abysmal”, Nana akwasi Agyemang IX noted.

According to him, even though the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has indicated that scientifically, the drilling of oil is not causing any environmental problem to fishing activities in the region, fish catch has been on the decline.

The Vice President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs therefore expressed hope that a committee will be set up and directed to look into the problem and propose steps to address the situation.

President Mahama, who is in the region as part of his three day working tour, told the Chiefs, his government is concerned about human development and the total facelift of the region.

The President said government has embarked on some projects that will create thousands of jobs for the people in the region, citing the expansion of the Takoradi Harbour.

Joy News’ Presidential correspondent, Seth Kwame Boateng reports that President Mahama told a congregation of the Grace Pentecostal Assembly of God Church in Effiakuma to take advantage of the many opportunities available to them.

According to the President, there is the need for the people to prepare adequately and position themselves in the number of industries and companies that are being established in the region.

The president noted that even though the country is going through some challenges, there is hope that very soon, the economy will get better.

Official statement from actress Biola Ige about her semi-nude movie scene picture leak

“I was going to remain silent on the photo being displayed on the internet however I realise that I need to set the record straight for my family, friends and fans who I love and respect.

The photo in question was taking from the set of a movie called “Pregnant Hawkers” in which i played a Hawker who was in a romantic situation with a man (The actor in the photo). This movie was shot and aired two years ago. The photo circulating the internet right now is the photo from a scene in the movie and nothing more. IF you watched the movie you will see that there is nothing to this movie other than the fact that i was playing a role! Continue…

I am an actress, it is a profession that i love and will continue to enjoy. I am required to play all sorts of roles. In each role i step out of being Biola Ige and go straight into ‘character’.

Whoever who maliciously leaked this photo to make it appear to be something else has simply given me some great publicity! Thank you!

I have been through a lot of difficult things this year with the loss of my mom and a brief illness, that a simple photo from a movie scene from 2 years ago is the least of my worries. I have no further comments regarding this act to hurt my character.

I look forward to acting more movies, and playing more roles to entertain you. Thank you all for reading.”

PlayStation 4 being used to broadcast live s3x sessions

playstation 4 sex

The PlayStation 4, Sony's new gaming console, has a camera that can be used to record gamers while they play. But after only two weeks on sale, the PS4 is already being used to broadcast sex sessions with the virtual-reality game "The Playroom," which lets gamers share feeds of their living rooms through a video platform called Twitch.

"People streaming 'The Playroom' are getting banned," Reddit user beethy wrote. "A few minutes ago there was a guy having sex with his partner on the couch."
Unfortunately, it doesn't end there.
Over the weekend, a man who goes by Darckobra used "The Playroom" to share a feed of him drinking with his wife, according to the game site Game Revolution. When she passed out, the man undressed her for the whole world to see. This horrifying act, which Slate rightfully calls sexual abuse, got Darckobra's Twitch account banned.
The video platform is cracking down on "non-gaming content" in "The Playroom," according to its Twitter account.

Human Rights activist hails establishment of police independent complaints unit

The Regional Coordinator of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative and a member of the Coalition of the Right to Information, Mina Mensah has hailed the police initiative to introduce massive crackdown on personnel, who flout the law in their line of duty.

Speaking to Joy News Tuesday, the human rights activist noted that there had been a long struggle to get an independent complaint unit meant to receive complaints against the police personnel.

According to her, the coalition had for about nine years called for the institution of a unit that would enable the public lodge complaints against officials of the police, who commit infractions.

"If the police have now realized it, then it is welcomed", Mina Mensah asserted, noting that the initiative would place Ghana Police service in line with internationally accepted practices.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Alhassan vowed to deal with police personnel, who go contrary to the law in their line of duty.

At a ceremony to announce plans to boost public confidence in the service, Mr. Alhassan hinted the institution of an Independent Complaints Commission.

The commission, when established, will give the public a chance to provide information about infractions on the part of the police.

The initiative comes amid mounting concerns about police abuse of power, including connivance with criminals and detention of suspects in cells beyond the legally mandated 48 hours.

Mr. Alhassan says the independent complaint unit will strictly abide by the rules governing it to ensure the security of Ghanaians.

Joy News' Fiifi Koomson reported that ushering in the new programme dubbed “The Re-affirmation of Public Confidence", was an ambitious project by the police service to regain lost public confidence.

The police were confident of increasing its presence on the streets. Police Commissioner, Rose Bio Atinga says the latest plans by the service will yield great results.

Meanwhile, there has been mixed reactions from the public as to whether or not they would readily report crimes committed by the police.

While some greeted the new development with gladness and assured that they will abide by the rules, others rejected the initiative as they expressed mistrust in the police service.

Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Omane-Boamah, has commissioned the One-Stop Service Centre as part of the first phase of the eGovernment Platform Project.

The eGovernment project, which is being built by Huawei Technologies (Gh) Ltd, will enable the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to improve the activities of the country's public sector organisations, when completed.

The first phase of the project, apart from the One-Stop Service Centre, also provides Tele-Presence, Call Centre for e-Government services, Metro fibre, Local Area Network for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Secondary Data Centre in Kumasi, supply of Desktop Computers and other ICT terminal equipments.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Police Service, among other agencies also form part of the administrative integration for the first phase of the project.

Dr Omane-Boamah made these known during a brief handing over ceremony on Monday March 17, 2014 in Accra.

The service centre has been deployed with Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology to facilitate data transmission at 4th Generation speed levels.

"This will ensure that the service centre provides one-stop services for all Ghanaians with fast and professional business operations by the Agencies", the Minster noted.

The Minister revealed that Phase 2 of the project will see the construction of twenty-one Community Information Centres (CICs) in Nandom, Nabdam, Drobonso, Effiduase, Bodi, Twifo Atti Morkwa, Glefe, Abokobi, Keta, Bator, Nalerigu, Sanarigu, and many other locations far from the capital.

I Can’t Live Without Fennec – Ursula Owusu Weeps

Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, has said she does not know how to continue to live in the absence of Fennec Okyere, the artiste manager who was murdered last Thursday.

“Fennec was everything to me. Anytime I wanted to get something done but I did not know how to go about it, I would call him and he would direct me on what to do.

“I don’t know how to live without him….he was very very hard working and generous to a fault,” Madam Ursula noted on the Peace FM Entertainment Review show last Saturday.

According to Ursula, Fennec stayed with her for a very long time and many people who knew them thought he was her son.

Ursula said she bonded very well with Fennec and through him she got to know several of the movers and shakers of the showbiz fraternity.

Sounding rather sober, Ursula pleaded with the media and general public to exercise restraint and wait for the outcome of the Police investigations into the homicide rather than embark on speculations as to who might have killed him.

“The speculations are becoming too many and they rather make the family sad and worsen the situation. I would plead with the media and the public to stop the speculations in these trying times. The family is not enjoying any part of this,” she added.

Fennec was murdered at his residence last Thursday dawn.

He is survived by new wife, Amakyi and about a year-old son.

90% of the Internet is hidden from us

In October 2013, the FBI shutdown Silk Road, a popular online black market where users could buy drugs, weapons, and even assassins. While this marketplace was operating on the Internet, you’d be hard-pressed to find it via Google. In fact, you would have to be part of a secret network that operates in a small portion of the Internet known as the Deep Web.

So what is the Deep Web exactly, and what seedy, nefarious activity happens there? Well, you might be surprised by the answer (hint: that private photo album dedicated to your cat is part of the Deep Web).

Mashable tries its best to explain what the Deep Web is to us…

IGP warns - All image tarnishing vices will be eliminated

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Alhassan has warned personnel in Ghana Police Service that his leadership will boldly confront and eradicate actions which have over years brought the integrity of the Service into disrepute.

“The only way forward is to boldly confront and eliminate all image tarnishing vices and their associated perpetrators in the service,” he stated

He acknowledged that some of its personnel have been engaging in ‘shameful’ and ‘disgraceful’ acts which is bringing about public disaffection towards the service.

This according to the IGP, prompted the administration to do a self assessment to rid the Service of the unscrupulous personnel.

Addressing service men and the media at the launch the reaffirmation campaign of the Service, Mr. Alhassan stated this his administration over the past year has been “working hard address some of the complaints from civil society groups, the media, the public and other agencies.”

The self assessment he said revealed some root causes including; the excessive use of force by personnel, abuse of rights of suspects, illegal or over detention of suspects, wrongful arrests and detentions, poor management of detained persons among others.

Some unethical conducts were also established during the self assessment and it consisted of extortion of money on the roads by personnel, demanding money before granting bails, poor investigations and prosecution of cases, meddling in civil cases, undertaking of unlawful duties and malicious prosecutions.
The IGP admitted that some administration weaknesses hamper the efficiency and effective performance of personnel.

Mr. Alhassan has since served notice there will be a “significant shift in the implementation of the basic standards and practices reflective of a progressive, accountable and forward thinking law enforcement agency.”

Power Outages Intensify

Has the Energy Minister brought back any soothing news from Nigeria?

Power generation and supply in Ghana has reduced by 270 megawatts due to the shutdown of Asogli Power Plant and the Mines Reserve Plant.

This has led to an emergency load management, as consumers of electricity are forced to sleep in the dark or lose power during the day without prior notice from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The recent erratic power supply, according to the power providers, was also due to the reduction in the supply of gas from Nigeria, among other factors, to power thermal plants at Takoradi to complement power produced from the Akosombo Hydro-electric Dam.

As a result of this, ECG is expected to announce a timetable for a load-shedding exercise soon.

Speaking to a group of Ghanaian clergymen at Flagstaff House in Accra on Monday, President John Mahama said he had sent Energy Minister, Kofi Armah Buah, to Nigeria to meet the management of the West African Gas Pipeline Company over the shortfall in the supply of gas from Nigeria.

According to him, his administration was concerned about power supply in the country.

After enduring erratic power supply in 2013, consumers, who expected an improved power supply this year due to numerous assurances given by the President and the Energy Minister, have expressed disappointment in the authorities.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and ECG – producers, transmitters and distributors in the power sector respectively, have formally announced a “temporary load management” exercise beginning March 17 due to generation challenges.

According to Dr Charles Wereko-Brobbey, Chief Policy Analyst at the Ghana Institute of Policy Options (GIPPO), the instability in the country’s power sector could be attributed to the lack of will by government to execute adopted plans.

[Soyabetex] - Diabetes Busting Product Hits Ghana Market

A natural diabetes herbal formula has hit the Ghanaian market to rejuvenate lives of people diagnosed with the deadly disease.

“Those dependent on insulin, the dependency is gone,” Kwesi da-Costa Vroom, Head of Sales and Marketing at Hords Limited told DAILY GUIDE exclusively on Monday.

The product, called Soyabetex, is produced in Accra by Hords Limited, a local Ghanaian company. According to Mr Vroom, the product is made from a secret recipe consisting of soybeans, moringa plant, dandelion, among others. It had also been certified by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ghana Standards Board.

He explained that the products were made from advanced herbal formula of purely natural products, “any other thing that is in it (the Soyabetex) is natural…A lot more people who have used it have shown improvement both locally and internationally,” he stated.

“We have testimonies streaming in all over,” Faustina, a diabetic patient who spoke to DAILY GUIDE gave glowing endorsement to the product, saying, “ I wasn’t able to control my sugar level, but whenever I take Soyabetex,  it lowers my sugar level…I will recommend it to any diabetes.”

It is believed that the product that comes as a beverage has been able to manage symptoms of diabetes including frequent urination, sexual weakness, and blurred vision, among others.

Statistics shows that diabetes is assuming an alarming trend in Ghana. The Ghana Diabetes Foundation estimates that the total diabetes population in Ghana as at June-2011 was 4,216,000 with an estimated diabetes population growth rate from 2011 to 2030 at 51 percent.

Ghana is one of the countries with the highest diabetes prevalence rate in Africa, recording more cases compared to other countries with significantly higher general population. For instance, Nigeria with a population almost hitting 200 million, there is an estimated 3 million people officially diagnosed with diabetes.

In South Africa, there are about 1.9 million people living with diabetes; In Ethiopia, statistics shows that 1.4 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes while Kenya recorded only 769,000 cases of diabetes as at 2011.

It is believed that the Ghanaian diet consisting mostly of starchy foods are responsible for the escalating trend of diabetes in the country.
