6-Year-Old Dies In Borla Junction Fire

11:10:00 AM

A Devastating fire that razed down 14 structures at Borla Junction at Sowutuom, a suburb of Accra, last Thursday night also burnt a six-year-old child to death.

The deceased, Lordina Tagborlo, was said to be asleep, when the fire started at about 8 p.m.

Besides the 14 structures, which accommodated about 40 people, five shops were also burnt.

At the time personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) got to the scene, the damage had already been caused.

Lordina

A tearful Matilda Asare, aka Hagar, mother of the deceased child, told the Daily Graphic that but for one of her children, they would all have died in the inferno.

According to her, one of her children woke her up and told them there was a fire outbreak in the area.

"I quickly ran out with the small one who is almost two years, while my sister rushed out with the other two children without us knowing where Lordina was," she said.

Lordina is the eldest of the four children of Mr Tagborlo and Ms Asare.

Explaining how the family discovered the death of Lordina, Ms Asare said after the fire had been brought under control by personnel of the GNFS, the charred body of Lordina was discovered in the debris.

Loud noise

A victim of the fire disaster, Mr Samuel Appiah, who operates a Fan Milk depot, said at the time personnel of the GNFS got to the scene, the structures had already been burnt.

"I heard a noise from outside and within two minutes, the fire had spread all over and we were unable to pick anything," he said.

Observation

On a visit to the scene yesterday, the Daily Graphic discovered that some of the squatters were in a dilemma and wondering where to sleep, while others were mourning the death of Lordina.

The victims called on corporate institutions and the government to come to their aid.

When the Daily Graphic contacted the Sowutuom Police Station, Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Abare Wuni confirmed that Lordina died in the fire.

He said her remains had been taken to the Police Hospital Morgue for autopsy.
