There Is A Bigger Hand Protecting Galamsey Operators- PRO Of Minerals Commission

As steps are taken to flush out people who engage in the galamsey business, the Public Relations Officer for Minerals Commission, Mr. Isaac Abraham has indicated that never would the authority legalize the operations of illegal miners.

Mr. Isaac Abraham however stated that the Minerals Commissions would rather regulate operations of small scale miners because their activities protect Ghanas lands and rivers.

He explained on ATVs Anopa Bosuo show that settlement, mangroves and rivers are prohibited areas for mining, over 80% of galamsey as recorded mine at these prohibited areas in Ghana. The Minerals Commission do not licence any mining company to mine in these prohibited areas so anyone caught in these areas must be taken on.

He added that minerals commission will not agree in the legalisation of galamsey in Ghana because most of these miners work in the prohibited areas of mining. There is a bigger arm somewhere which is hindering us from arresting people who engage in illegal mining.

He advised that the time has come for the commission to continuously organise seminars in all mining areas to educate them on reasons they cant mine in prohibited areas.

I Will Strike Any Chinese National Who Refuses To Stop Galamsey -Abronye

As Ghanaians clamour about the disturbing effect of illegal mining to our land, Kwame Baffoe has suggested that foreigners mainly Chinese nationals, who are behind the act, should be arrested and later deported.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Youth of the New Patriotic Party noted on ATVs Asem Yi Di Ka show that Ghanaians shouldnt put all their energy into political matters but rather concentrate on how to preserve our land from people who are harming it.

Kwame Baffoe who is popularly known as ‘Abronye indicated that the menace was becoming difficult to deal with due to the role some chiefs and politicians play in the illegal mining business.

He particularly singled out the Chinese illegal miners and cautioned our authorities to deport such nationals when caught engaging in the galamsey business. This he said must be done to save our lands and rivers from degrading.

I will do what it takes to support fight illegal activities in Ghana and I will strike any Chinese who refuses to stop galamsey in Ghana, he said.

We have 10 Year Fraud Experience says suspects

Two suspected fraudsters, Ibraheem Balogun and Adeyinka Adebola, have told the police in Lagos that they had been defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians for more than 10 years.

Balogun and Adebola were arrested on Tuesday by the Zonal Intervention Squad (ZIS) of the Zone II Police Command, on the way to their shrine at Abule Titun in Obafemi Owodem Local Government Area of Ogun State. The squad led CSP Gbenga Megbope, also rescued a 64-year-old nurse, Goodluck Ogbodu, at the shrine. It was learnt that Balogun, who lives at Ugheli with the nurse, lured the victim from Delta State to their shrine to help him find a lasting solution to his back pain. But the suspects later defrauded Ogbodu of N200,000.

It was learnt that the police had been on the trail of the suspected kidnappers cum fraudsters before they were arrested when they were taking Ogbodu to their shrine. Ogbodu, who thanked the police for saving his life from the kidnappers' shrine, described the operation as a divine intervention.

He said: "I know the leader of the gang, Ibraheem Balogun, at Ugheli, Delta State. He used to come to my house for medical check-ups. Whenever he comes, I don't collect money from him. He was staying opposite my house."

Ogbodu added that when the back pain was becoming unbearable for him, Balogun said he had some herbal mixture that could relieve him of his pains. He said: "Balogun said I should come with N200, 000 to meet his boss. I left Ugheli for Lagos, I was told to stop at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Camp (Redemption Camp) that he would bring a car to come and pick me."

The victim said, when the suspect came there was no vehicle at the Redemption Camp so they had to take a motorcycle to Obafemi Owode roundabout from where another member of the gang, Adebola, came to pick them. Balogun, a father of three, confessed to the crime.

The suspect claimed that they had wanted to dupe the victim but denied being a kidnapper. He said: "At this point, I don't need to lie to you again. I am a traditional doctor but we wanted to dupe the man, when we were arrested. I have never killed for ritual in my life. "I started this job 10 years ago. We are only looking for what we wanted to eat. We don't kill our victims.

We only collect money from them and release after duping them." Also, Adebola confessed to be a member of the syndicate but denied that they wanted to use the victim for ritual. He said: "I was a former film producer but I became a traditional doctor, when things were not going well. I have been duping people for over 10 years." When contacted, the Zone II Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the arrest.

Ghana Should Be Fighting Against ECG Concession - Steve Manteaw

A member of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), Dr. Steve Manteaw, is against attempts to improve the $498 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact II between Ghana the US.

He believes the country should completely reject the MCC Compact II, which will see the concession of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA).

In Dr. Manteaws view, the credibility of the whole concession arrangement has been shattered completely insisting that we should be rejecting it outright.

He further expressed discomfort at attempts to try to repair that damage by making recommendations as to why or how it can be improved.

Under the power compact, six projects will be implemented to address the root causes of the unavailability and unreliability of power in Ghana, in a bid to make the ECG more efficient.

But Dr. Manteaw punched holes in such a mandate noting that, one of ECGs main problem was that it has not been able to invest in its operations largely because of governments huge indebtedness to it.

The ECG is also deemed to be inefficient because of factors like obsolete equipment, he added, and thus drew a link between these two points noting that if government does not pay what it owes ECG, how on earth can ECG invest in its operations

In Dr. Manteaws view, Ghana is perfectly capable of managing its own affairs, and noted that, similar concessionary endeavors in the past, had not turned out well.

This is no different from the Aqua Vitens Rand contract which was a management contract, but bore the hallmarks of a concession, and we warned that it would not succeed and it did not. Luckily for us, it was limited to only five years so we had the opportunity to cut our losses and get out of that terrible deal Today, Ghana Water is in the hands of Ghanaians and at the ‘Kufuor gallons which became the order of the day have vanished.

The Compact II agreement

Ghana and the Millennium Challenge Corporation of the US government signed the second Compact in October 2016.

The agreement brought to total $1.4 billion received by the government to be injected into the countrys energy sector geared towards making the ECG more efficient.

The project under the compact includes the ECG Financial and Operational Turnaround Project, NEDCo Financial and Operational Turnaround Project, Regulatory Strengthening and Capacity Building Project, and Access Project.

The rest are Power Generation Sector Improvement Project and Energy Efficiency, and Demand Side Management Project.

UMB Earmarks $100 Million To Support One District, One Factory Initiative

The management of the Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) has earmarked US$100 million to help the government's one district, one factory initiative. The bank says it is also ready to help any entity that ventures into the initiative with up to US$1 million.

To that end, the bank will invest a total of up to $50 million in the centre; to be availed in Ghana cedi at the prevailing exchange rate.

It is the belief of the bank that the policy initiative by the government is workable and achievable and, therefore, requires active stakeholder participation.

To qualify for the selection criteria, the business thought must be supported by the Ministry of Trade and Industry and or the Ministry of Business Development as well as pass the UMBs Feasibility Assessment process.

A management team of the bank, led by its Board Chairperson, Mrs Betty Zormelo, announced this when it paid a courtesy call on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff House yesterday.

Product already available

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the UMB, Mr John Awuah, said the bank was not considering the thought of making the facility available to clients in the future but said a department had already been set up which was prepared to engage with clients interested in developing or building factories in the country.

Describing the one district, one factory policy as grandiose, he said every district of the country had a definite economic potential that could be exploited when an adjoining factory was put in place.

He said the initiative by the government was well-thought out and one that would accelerate the development of the country.

UMB PPP Incubator Centre

Mr Awuah explained that in 2016, the UMB established the UMB Centre for Businesses, a stand-alone unit designed to set a new standard in the delivery of SME Banking Services.

We have leveraged on this solid SME banking experience to set up a UMB PPP Incubator Centre solely for the purposes of supporting the needs of enterprises that seek to partner with the government on the One District, One Factory concept, he said.

Mr Awuah spoke about the 2017 budget which set out various brave agenda for the transformation of the economy, saying that one of the flagship concepts under the transformation agenda was the One District, One Factory concept.

However, due to the dire economic circumstances in which Ghana currently finds itself, the government is limited in its ability to provide funding for this project and it shall be implemented with the private sector through various Private Public Partnerships (PPP), he said

Target enterprises

He said the bank identified groups of enterpreneurs seeking to collaborate to expand their businesses through value addition as well as university graduates seeking an opportunity to develop their enterpreneurial skills.

Mr Awuah added that the fund would also target enterpreneurs with a track record in growing and managing businesses and existing enterprises whose businesses meet the aforementioned business thought selection criteria.

Services to be provided

He said the bank would provide business plan development, financing, funds management and business advisory services.

The CEO said the goal of the bank would be to support those businesses to become structured, efficient, locally and globally competitive and sustainable.

The UMB, he said, would be proud to be associated with such an elaborate initiative of the government aimed at transforming the economic fortunes of the country.

Birthday gift

The President described the announcement as one of his birthday gifts coming from a bank.

He said the devotion of the government to ensuring even development across the country could only be achieved through the one district, one factory initiative.

But its success, he said, was conditioned on the active involvement of the private sector in providing the resources within the investor-friendly environment created by the government.

The President described the decision by the UMB as exemplary and an expression of nationalism within the context of business and investment.

He gave an assurance that the government would not renege on its promise to create the enabling environment for private businesses to thrive, saying the policies that had been deployed were already showing strong signs of the governments commitment.

He tasked the Trade and Industry Ministry to strongly partner the bank to ensure that the product of the bank was patronised by interested businesses who bought into the one district, one factory vision.

President Akufo-Addo assured the bank that should it encounter any challenge in dealing with the ministries, his doors were always open and that they could go to him.

State CEOs Milk Ghana Dry . . . Highest Earns GH89,000 A Month

When the Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh committee presented its report on new emoluments for Article 71 class of public sector workers in September 2016, breaking the news that Members of Parliament (MPs) were to receive GHȼ19,430 as monthly salaries, many were those who complained that it was too much for a country like Ghana.

The report was a task former President John Dramani Mahama, then Head of State, constituted the five-member committee to perform, as part of his constitutional mandate to review the emoluments of Article 71 public sector workers in the country.

Ghanaians criticised the committee hugely for also pegging the Speaker of Parliament and the First Gentleman of the land, the President, at GHȼ24,287 and GHȼ30,359 respectively.

But, little did we know that those figures were the tip of the ice-berg, and that many chief executive officers (CEOs) and other heads of state-owned organisations were receiving high and above what our politicians are receiving.

Information available to The Chronicle, and corroborated by Hackman Owusu Agyemang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Cocoa Board, indicates that the gross monthly salary of the immediate past CEO, Stephen Kwabena Opuni, is GHȼ75,102.

This is aside, other facilities such as free accommodation, two vehicles, one sports utility vehicle (SUV) and one salon car, free electricity, water and telephone, a garden boy, security, driver, house help, as well as fuel are drawn from government sources.

Speaking on the Adom FM flagship programme, Dwaso Nsem, yesterday morning, Mr. Owusu Agyeman admitted that each of the three deputy directors of Cocobod takes home GHȼ42,000.

The three deputy directors also enjoy other allowances and side issues, including vehicles, free accommodation, electricity, water and telephone, a garden boy, gate man, driver, house support as well as fuel from government sources.

Furthermore, unconfirmed information available to The Chronicle shows that the salary of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana is GHȼ89,909, almost three times that of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Also unbelievable is the monthly salary of the CEO of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), who is considered the second highest paid head of a public institution in the country. His salary is GHȼ88,102.

Additionally, the paper received that the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), the company which is currently on its knees, takes home a whopping GHȼ76,606.

The Chronicle further gathered that the Managing Director of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) receives GHȼ68,707 as his monthly salary, while the CEO of the National Investment Bank (NIB) enjoys GHȼ65,000 monthly.

Interestingly, while the Managing Director of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) smiles home every month with a total of GHȼ62,000, his counterpart at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is paid GHȼ56,000.

Ghanaians are worried, therefore, that when Awuah Darko was appointed to head the two state organisations concurrently, he was receiving GHȼ118,000 monthly, which is about four times what President Mahama was enjoying on a monthly basis.

At the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), the Managing Director receives GHȼ55,000 as monthly salary.

The Executive Director of the state-owned investigative body, Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), bags GHȼ44,909 monthly, so far the least paid among the heads of these state-owned organisations currently under consideration.

According to our information, almost all of these heads retire on their salaries, some as huge as 10 years of salaries of some workers in the country.

Make Noise About Corruption – Lecturer Tells Clergy

A lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, has challenged the clergy in Ghana not to keep mute about the canker called corruption, economic mismanagement and terrible policies that have plagued the country, but rather be vociferous about them.

The clergy cannot continue with the practice of finding their voice to pray for peace for the nation during national elections. While it is commendable to pray for calm political atmosphere for national development, it is equally vital to be vociferous and decisive about economic mismanagement, corruption and terrible policies. You should remember that the clergy has a key role to play in the national effort to forge political tolerance and unity in Ghana, underscored the lecturer, Dr Stephen Baffour Adjei.

He made this call on Sunday during the 5th graduation ceremony of the Bethesda  Center of Evangelism and Bible School at Anomawobi, along the Kasoa-Bawjiase road in the Central Region. The 11 graduands were from Ghana, Togo, Nigeria and Kenya who had undergone training in pastoral studies, church history, basic computer studies, health education, homiletics, hermeneutics, evangelism, agriculture, among others.

Making reference to President Nana Akufo-Addos call on Ghanaians to be responsible citizens and not mere spectators, Dr Baffour Adjei said its a call to the clergy to teach and preach messages that can support transform the lackadaisical attitude of congregants to active citizens who will not only be interested in what Ghana can do for them, but to also show maximum interest in what they can do for mother Ghana.

Dr Baffour Adjei entreated the graduands to go out..to be the voice for the voiceless; to gently but firmly and unequivocally expose error and place its ugly countenance under the light so that all can see its deformity and hateful nature.

He challenged them to make conscious effort to repair the national and religious discourse in the country, be honest and speak with civility and constructive voices that deserve to be part of the necessary conversations in which the church of Christ was engaged.

He noted that the graduands, being fishers of men, have a huge obligation imposed on them and their families to be relevant and exemplary to the one who has called them: to be fine models in society and to live up to the high expectations of the Ministry of Christ and of their calling.

I entreat you to go and live up to your moral commitment to God and to your country. I appeal to you today to go and make the value of sincerity, love, purposeful-mindedness, patience and humility the foundation of your life and your Ministry, Dr Baffour Adjei admonished.

The lecturer noted that today, one does not have to look far to see innumerable self-acclaimed men of God who have made it a duty to preach and practise what he called dirty theology, adding, This type of theology is devoted to developing a reputation rather than character. It is the kind of theology that emphasizes material gains over salvation; the kind that treasures flamboyant lifestyle more than the moderate and humble lifestyle of Christ.

While this is happening, he noted also that there equally fine number of true believers who silently sigh and cry for the abomination, confusion and darkness which assails the precious Church of Christ.

Dr Stephen Baffour Adjei admonished management of the school to seek updated and contemporary ways to further position the Bible School and increase its visibility. He suggested the inclusion of church administration and management as well as leadership and organizational behaviour in an extended programme timetable.

The Director of the school, Sharna Welty, commended those who are handling farming, saying it is an integral part of the training.

She thanked the chief of Anomawobi, Nai Okpeh Okai (who was at the event) for his cooperation and support.

Volta Chiefs Lead Demo Against Ritual Murders

Seven communities within the Dzita-Anyanui Traditional Area in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region yesterday staged a massive demonstration against what they described as protracted ritual killings that have been going-on in their communities.

The over one-thousand aggrieved citizens, led by their chiefs including the Divisional Chief of Anyanui Traditional Area, Torgbui Gamor II, wore red bands, sang war songs and took to the streets to demonstrate against the heinous crime being perpetuated in their communities.

The communities that staged the demonstration included Agbledomi, Tunu, Bomigo, Atiteti, Fuveme, Dzita and Anyanui.

The demonstrators could not understand why since 2016, six people had reportedly been murdered mysteriously in the communities.

Some of the victims who were found had their private organs, heads, tongues and arms removed.

They lamented that some people have also been reported missing, making reference to a 49-year-old carpenter, Mr. Gershon Agbodo, who has been reported missing since March 20, 2017.

According to residents of the seven communities, the ritual killings reportedly started in 2013 with 10 confirmed deaths recorded so far.

However, the situation in which the victims were found made it difficult for easy identification.

They asserted that the rampant killings in recent times have led to a situation where the residents were living in fear for which reason they staged the demonstration to draw the attention of the security authorities and the government to their plight.

The Divisional Chief of the Anyanui Traditional Area, Torgbui Gamor II, led a delegation to present a petition to the Keta Police District Command, appealing to the authorities to investigate the matter.

The Keta District Commander, Superintendent Jordan Quaye, who received the petition, assured the chief and his delegation that the matter would receive the necessary attention.

The complaints of the people were that although the killings were on the increase nobody had been arrested and no investigation had been conducted by the police.

In an interview with Today, Torgbui Gamor II disclosed that the bodies were normally dumped in the mangrove forests on the outskirt of the area or buried at the beach.

According to him, some of the victims included children between the ages of 7 and 13 whose parents had left them at home to pursue their livelihood outside the home, only to return to find them missing.

Torgbui Gamor said on March 15, 2013 a 13-year-old boy, Wonder Awuni, who was left at home by his parents, went missing and his body was later found without the head at the bank of Detorme lagoon.

A angry man was also reportedly killed about a week ago and dumped in the lagoon.

According to Torgbui Gamor, they could not tell if the perpetrators were in the communities or from outside.

He said the people believed that the persons behind the killings were using the bodies for ritual purposes in order to have bumper harvest in their fishing activities.

Clearly, the unresolved murder cases are not only a sign of insecurity but negatively affecting our socio-economic and psychological wellbeing, he expressed.

Apprehending the perpetrators, he said, would give confidence to the people to make them feel secure.

Meanwhile, the youth in the area have threatened to deal with anybody they suspect to be part of the killings to protect their people if the police do not respond appropriately.

‘Make Diasporans Part Of Nation Building

President and Chairman of Groupe Nduom (GN), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has bemoaned the situation where Ghanaians in the diaspora are neglected in the governance system just because they have acquired foreign citizenships.

This, he stressed, does not support in nation building.

Dr. Nduom made the observation on Ghana, Great and Strong, a non-partisan interactive programme broadcast every Saturday from 7:00 p.m.,â€"8:00 p.m., on media outlets spread across the country.

Speaking on the topic: A View of Ghana at 60 From Abroad, Dr. Nduom called on Ghanaians all over the world to come home and support build the country.

It is my wish that we make it possible for a lot of them to come to Ghana and contribute their quota. Are we saying that if you are a Ghanaian and you go to America and for whatever reason you get an American citizenship and you want to come back to Ghana, because you have gone abroad and changed your citizenship there are definite jobs you cannot hold in Ghana , he asked.

The President of GN could not understand why when it comes to the issue of football, the authorities go globe-trotting for Ghanaians who are not born in Ghana to come and feature for the national teams.

What is more competitive in Ghana than football Lets bring these experienced people back home to support our country develop and not America, Britain or Germany, he submitted.

In his opinion, Ghanaians in the diaspora should not be driven away because they have acquired another citizenship status and therefore should be abandoned.

He indicated that Ghanaians abroad who have wealth of knowledge and experience should be brought on board for the development of the nation.

The ROPAL must work for them. If they can vote here more of their monies will come, their experience will also come and lets make it possible to ensure that they get high level jobs in Ghana so they can bring their experience here, and we will benefit as well as government and businesses, he said.

Dr. Nduom was equally worried that the country has become so polarised. That development, he said, has been the bane of our economic woes.

In acknowledgement to a caller that he [Dr. Nduom] should be given Central Region to manage, this was what he said: I have spoken privately with some people that I will love to have the opportunity to be given KEEA for four years so that I can show Ghanaians what a municipality can become.

Also touching on Ghanas infrastructure, the business magnate was not happy with the kind of public buildings that Ghanaians put up.

Comparing buildings in the State of Georgia and the City of Chicago in the United States of America to that of Ghana, he said public buildings in these two States were built by men like Ghanaians but they know quality, they know how to build to last.

so at 60 years what are we going to do Looking at the buildings we have they are falling apart as if somebody is playing with them. But we need buildings that our children and grandchildren will be proud to come and say this is what our elders did for us.

I hope somebody will hear me and determine that they will do something about itand even if I cannot do it somebody else will get the motivation to do something different to support this country that we call Ghana, he said.

2 Nigerian Women Arrested For Human Trafficking

The leader of the gang, only identified as Angel, is on the run, and being sought by the police.

The suspects on arrival at Ghana, were said to have made their victims swear oath to engage in prostitution at some nightclubs at Baastona in Accra, and each was expected to pay 555,000,00 Naira (equivalent to $2,000) to the suspects.

UK Protest Over Ghana, Nigeria Deportations - BBC

Seventeen people have been arrested after a protest at Stansted Airport in Essex temporarily halted take-offs and landings on Tuesday.

Police were called at 21:30 BST as a group entered a non-commercial runway and locked themselves in an aircraft.

Those involved were trying to stop a charter flight which they claim was due to deport people to Nigeria and Ghana.

A spokesman for the airport said the runway was closed as a "precaution" but reopened at 23.17 BST.

In total, 23 incoming flights were diverted to other airports, including scheduled arrivals from Naples, Cologne, Glasgow, Riga, Belfast and Bilbao.

The spokesman said the protest took place in a remote part of the airport used by private operators, away from the passenger terminal or runway.

'Quickly contained'

Essex Police said on Wednesday that officers were at the scene and in the process of removing protesters from the aircraft, which was destined for Nigeria.

Acting Assistant Chief Constable Sean O'Callaghan said police "quickly contained" the protesters in one area of the airport.

"We continue to work closely with our partners and the airport authority as we are working to apprehend the protesters quickly and effectively," he said.

He added that there was "minimal impact" on the airport. The force said three arrests had been made so far, but no more details were given.
The activists posted images of the protest on social media, including a photograph of people lying on the ground as they were surrounded by security staff and police.

In a Facebook post they said the flight was due to "forcibly deport dozens of people to Nigeria and Ghana" but this has not been confirmed.

One of the protestors, Susan James, said: "I don't want to stay silent in the face of mass deportations that are deliberately rushed and secretive."

Kenyan Pastor Storms Mortuary To Resurrect His Dead Wife

Mortuary attendants at the Gakwegori Funeral Home in Kenya were left shocked when a pastor stormed the mortuary to resurrect his dead wife.

Pastor Robinson Karumba of Eagle Wings Prophetic Ministries, arrived at the Gakwegori Funeral Home with his members in the early hours of Wednesday, demanding the body of his wife released to him, Nairobi News reported.

The deceased, Ms. Polly Rosa Ng endo who died following an undisclosed illness on Sunday, was released to his husband, who then took her into a secluded room, laid her naked body on a table and applied anointing oil.

Sources say after the pastor applied anointing oil on his late wife, he and his members started singing praise songs accompanied with a guitar and keyboard.

According to the pastor, who brought along clothes and shoes for his wife, he was following the teachings of Jesus which, he claimed, directed the believers would be raised from the dead after four days.
'We believe she is not dead, but merely resting. She is a believer like me and has preached in many places and with prominent preachers. I had to do what I have always preached. Jesus was called to Lazarus home after he had died for four days.' he said.

Explaining while he brought along musical instruments to the Mortuary, he said:'Even my Daughter said her mother will come back on Wednesday and that is why I came today. We are playing guitar and other instruments because she was a musician.'

The preacher also said people are preparing for her burial scheduled for Saturday, but if she resurrects before then, he will stage up a thanksgiving ceremony instead. 'Back at home, people have been preparing for the burial. If she resurrects, Saturday would be a thanksgiving ceremony. We will be marking her resurrection,' he said.

Passengers Attack Metro Mass Driver

Hell allegedly broke loose at Anto, a farming community near Daboase in the Western Region, on Monday when inflamed passengers on board a Takoradi-Kumasi bound Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus reportedly pounced on the driver and his conductor to refund their fares when the bus broke down.

According to information DAILY GUIDE gathered, the inflamed passengers purportedly subjected the driver and his conductor to attacks after the passengers had been stranded for close to six hours.

The passengers rushed on the driver and the bus conductor to demand back their fares after the bus broke down at Anto for over six hours, an eyewitness told DAILY GUIDE.

The paper gathered that the bus reportedly left Takoradi for Kumasi at about12 midday on Monday, March 27, 2017 and broke down at Anto at about 12:45 pm.

After some time, some mechanics were reportedly called in to support fix the fault.

However, the mechanics could not support to resolve the problem and the situation infuriated the passengers the more and so some of them rushed on the bus conductor and the driver to demand their monies.

Their reason was that their time was being wasted and that they would miss definite business opportunities.

To support save the situation, another bus was brought in to continue the journey.

The drama-saddled journey was thrown into another controversy soon after the bus had started when the conductor rushed to a police station along the road to make an assault case against one of the passengers.

The police reportedly came to arrest the said passenger but the other passengers resolved not to allow the police to carry out the arrest and in the process, the bus was held up for over two hours till the issue was resolved.

The MMT bus, which was supposed to reach Kumasi around 4pm on Monday, eventually arrived at about 1:00 am on Tuesday, March, 28.

Confirming the story in an interview with Takoradi-based Skyy Power FM, the Western Regional Director of MMT, Emmanuel Jefferson, apologised to the passengers for the hiccups.

He indicated that the problem was a minor one and so some mechanics from the company were sent to go and support fix the fault.

Unfortunately, as the bus was moving the problem resurfaced and so they had to send a new bus to continue the journey.

Road Accidents Kill 67 People In Brong Ahafo In 2017

Sixty-seven (67) people have died through 110 road accidents recorded in the Brong-Ahafo Region from January to March 2017.

Superintendent Oppong Asirifi, the Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), who disclosed this, said 174 people had also been injured while 33 pedestrian were involved.

He was speaking at the 2017 first Brong-Ahafo Regional Committee meeting of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in Sunyani on Wednesday.

Superintendent Asirifi said motor cycle crashes were also recording alarming figures, noting that 51 motorbikes had been involved in accidents this year.

Mr Samuel Obeng Asiamah, the Acting Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of the NRSC, said the alarming rate of road crashes in the Region needed absolute commitment from all road sector agencies and institutions.

He said in 2016, 286 persons died and 945 injured through 670 road crashes, involving 924 vehicles in the Region.
Mr Asiamah who is the Ashanti Regional Manager of the Commission, said the Commission and its major players would undertake aggressive advocacy for the use of crash helmets by motor riders.

He observed that motor crashes were rife in Wenchi, Berekum and Kintampo Municipalities and warned that the Commission would deal harshly with riders without helmet.

Mr Asiamah explained that the Committee had setup a taskforce and it intended to undertake night enforcement at drinking bars to check on reckless and drunk drivers during the Easter festivities.

The taskforce would be positioned at places such as Tyco and Dreamers, popular night drinking joints in the Sunyani Municipality.

Mr Asiamah also urged the transport unions to get emergency numbers printed and pasted on the vehicles to support passengers to call to report reckless drivers.

Meanwhile, some road sector institutions in the Region had re- affirmed their commitment to join and intensify road safety advocacy campaign, to bring road accidents in the Region to the barest minimum.

They include, the Department of Urban Roads, Motor Traffic and Transport Department, transport unions, National Ambulance Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority and the National Road Safety Commission.

Almost all the institutional heads who attended the regional committee meeting emphasised the need for a deepened and effective collaboration among stakeholders in the road sector in controlling road accidents.

Divisional Officer Grade One (DO1) Gyasi Boateng of the Ghana National Fire Service stressed the need for the Commission and its stakeholders to ensure that all commercial vehicles were registered under a transport union.

Affail Monney Fights Back

One of the contestants in the now suspended Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) election, who is also the President of the association Roland Affail Monney, has described allegations leveled against him as slanderous and spurious.

In a statement, he said it does not serve any useful purpose to dignify the perpetrators with any acknowledgement considering the negative image it gives to the media.

I have, however, been compelled to exercise my constitutional right to rejoinder because the stench emanating from those stories is so noxious that it can put the noses of objective minded journalists and decent members of society out of joint and more seriously inflict irreparable damage to our noble profession, he said.

Tracing the charges that have been leveled against him, Mr Monney said it started with the palpable falsehood that my children have been representing the GJA at international conferences abroad. With all the emphasis I can muster, none of my five children has ever travelled outside Ghana, let alone represent the GJA.

This was followed by the laughable allegation that Im conniving to sell the properties of the GJA. The office building and two abandoned vehicles we inherited are all intact.

He explained that we are about to begin work on a multi-million dollar, multi- purpose Press Centre Redevelopment Project with 80 percent commercial component to end our perennial dependence on donors. The team of architects and the consultant recently did a presentation to the Minister of Information who promised to give it the necessary push.

On the allegation that he is manipulating the GJA Election Committee to skew the process in his favour, he said: Since the election time table was announced, the Assorow Committee has effectively and uncompromisingly been in charge. The decision on who qualifies to vote or stand is entirely theirs. Again, they alone can choose the size of the voters register. The Dispute Adjudicating Committee, led by Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh, is also executing it functions freely and independently. The GJA executive does not, will not and cannot dictate to them.

He said Johnnie Aryeeteys Campaign Manager went on radio and television to accuse him of registering GIJ students to vote, which he said is totally false.

The fact is that a few weeks ago about four young men came to the Ghana International Press Centre to inquire about GJA membership. The Administrative Officer, Fiifi Nettey told them bluntly that they did not qualify to be members.

At best they could belong to the GIJ Students Chapter, who are not qualified to vote. They left without a single form being issued to them.

He added that their enquiry was even unnecessary because the membership forms can be downloaded free of charge from the GJA website. The voters list was later published without any of those students.

He pledged his fullest help to the Election Committee, Dispute Adjudicating Committee, Council of Elders of the GJA and all well-meaning journalists and public figures to support resolve the crisis which has enveloped the election, adding that they should also do all within their power to save our great professional body in an impartial and conciliatory manner.

FOCOS Announces Fundraiser To Support Surgeries Of Needy Children

The Foundation of Orthopaedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS) announces its maiden fundraising event in Ghana to take place at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel on Saturday 13th May, 2017 at 6.00pm.

Proceeds from the event will go into the FOCOS Endowment Fund to help needy children who require surgery as well as to equip the paediatric ward and a multi-purpose classroom including the activity centre for children.

For over a decade, FOCOS has been supporting children who would have otherwise remained stigmatized, isolated and even died from various degrees of spine deformities across Africa.

With the help of philanthropists over the world, FOCOS has fully sponsored and carried out life-saving surgeries on at least 500 children with the selfless leadership of Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, an internationally acclaimed Spine Surgeon and also the Founder and President of FOCOS.

Since 1998, Prof. Boachie-Adjei and his team of FOCOS volunteers have completed hundreds of complex spine surgeries and joint replacement surgeries on adult and pediatric patients from Ghana and all over the world.

In the past, individuals and organizations outside Ghana like FOCOS USA, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (AJJDC), Africa Surgery Inc. and others, have supported many children undergo life-changing surgeries, said Prof Oheneba Boachie-Adjei. According to the CEO and Founder, without these surgeries the life expectancies of these children would have been about 20 to 30 years. The spine is a critical organ to the human system and children who have defects with their spine cannot engage in sporting activities and normally do not live long if the right attention is not given to them in time, he added.

The top world-renowned surgeon called on individuals, NGOs and corporate organizations to help this worthy cause, saying I entreat corporate groups, individual philanthropists and foundations to give a child the chance to live a normal life and live longer to contribute their quota to society.

FOCOS has organized fundraising events in the US and Hong Kong to assist many Ghanaian and African children whose families could not afford their surgeries.

Target for this years event is GHC 5,000,000. So far organizations like Newmont Ghana, Glico, Latex Foam, House of Saphori, Touchpoint Magna Carta, Team 1000 words, Multimedia and Mantrac Ghana have made donations to advance this course.

Former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor have also agreed to help the occasion.

The public can contribute by either buying tickets to attend the event at 600 GHC for one or 1000 GHC for two or call 020-0000856/ 020319040.

Theres also room for the public to contribute to the Foundation for Orthopaedics and Complex Spine through the Universal Merchant Bank number 000020100141612, North Ridge branch.

Finance Minister Indirectly Shoots Down One District One Factory Policy

Minister for finance, Ken Ofori Atta is believed to have breached article 174(2) of the 1992 constitution, GIPC Act 2013 (865) as well as inter-country protocols on trade and investments through the withdrawal of tax exemptions from strategic investing companies in Ghana.

This was largely confirmed by Kweku Kwarteng, deputy minister designate for finance during his vetting in parliament today.

The Ghana government through the minister for finance has written to withdraw legitimately and lawfully granted tax exemptions from strategic investing companies in Ghana - a move which completely shoots down the one district one factory policy which is aimed at bringing strategic investors into all districts of our country to create employment and economic development.

Many strategic investors have chosen Ghana ahead of its West African neighbours because of the tax exemption incentive through the Ghana investment promotion Act. 2013.

According to Kwaku Kwarteng who is also MP for Obuasi West, the move by government is intended to deal with irregularities in the exemptions regime.

Answering a question from minority leader Hon. Haruna Iddrisu as to why such a counter-productive measure is being used by government to scare away strategic investors, Mr. Kwarteng said he supports the measure because the ministry of finance has given a fine reason for its decision.

'The minister of finance has responsibility to administer tax exemptions. There will be a refund to those beneficiaries. I know the implementation of that has started. In my humble opinion, so long as the value of the tax is removed from the beneficiaries, it constitutes a fair administration of the exemption especially as we have been told by the ministry of finance that it is intended to deal with irregularities of the exemptions regime, He said.

The minority leader Haruna Iddrisu however challenged the deputy finance minister designate that the withdrawal of the tax exemptions from strategic investors by the ministry of finance is a breach of the Act of parliament which approved the tax exemptions to these strategic investing companies and since the current tax variations by the ministry did not receive approval of parliament.

Article 174 (2) of the constitution states ‘Where an Act, enacted in accordance with clause (1) of this article, confers power of any person or authority to wave or vary a tax imposed by that Act, the exercise of the power of waiver or variation, in favour of any person or authority, shall be subject to the prior approval of parliament by resolution.

The withdrawal of the tax exemptions by the finance ministry has received a backlash from the business community especially foreign and local strategic investors who feel unfairly treated by the new governments directive because of the sudden financial burden it has brought to their businesses.

The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act 2013, (865) ‘provides for the encouragement and promotion of investments in Ghana, to provide for the creation of an attractive incentive framework and a transparent, predictable and facilitating environment for investments in Ghana.

It is believed that, the decision if not reversed by the finance ministry, could see a massive drop in the inflow of strategic investments into the country and it has the potential of scaring away existing strategic investors from Ghana with the end result being a drop in economic activity and job creation.

Energy Minister Cuts Sod For Project For Reinforcement Of Power Supply To Accra Central

The Minister of Energy, Honorable Boakye Agyarko has cut the sod for the PROJECT FOR REINFORCEMENT OF POWER SUPPLY TO ACCRA CENTRAL to improve upon the quality and reliability of power supply to the Central Business District Area of Accra.

The Minister said, the project is a landmark contribution to Ghana-Japan relationship which dates back to 1920s and looked forward to more of this partnership between Ghana and Japan under the leadership of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana.

He said, the project has come at a time when the country was working to increase its generating capacity to address challenges in the power sector. He congratulated GRIDCo and ECG for the Project which seeks to address the deteriorating quality of power to this very critical area of the nations capital that contributes immensely to the national economy. He urged GRIDCo and ECG to work with the Contractors and Consultants to ensure that the project is completed on time.

The Minister said electricity demand in the country continues to grow roughly by 10 percent annually. For this reason, projects such as this and others are welcome to enable the Nation supply consumers with their electricity energy demand.

This Governments vision for the provision of a safe, reliable and secure power supply also includes initiatives such as restructuring of debts of the utility companies and securing firm commitments for the reliable supply of fuel to the Thermal Plants, he said. In the Governments bid to boost the energy mix of the Ghana Power System, efforts are being made to increase the amount of Renewable Energy in the National Grid, he added.

The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Grid Company  (GRIDCo), Ing. William Amuna, in his welcome address expressed his gratitude to the Japanese Government, who through JICA, has provided a grant of 4.357 Billion JPY (about US$39 Million) for this project.

The Project is expected to be completed in the next 18 months and will have a dedicated Substation that will supply power to the Central Business District (CBD) and its immediate environs and also relieve the Achimota and Mallam Bulk Supply Points (BSPs) from overloading. The focus on this District is because it is the highest electricity consuming location in Ghana, constituting about 30 per cent of total consumption in Greater Accra. Additionally, the load growth in the Business District is higher than the national average of 10 percent. The year-end projected demand of the Area is 1,400MVA.

The Minister assured all of Governments resolve to revamp the Energy Sector for a brighter tomorrow.

On completion, electricity consumers in Accra Central and GRIDCo will directly reap benefits of the project. This is because, the Achimota, Mallam, Accra East, New Tema and Smelter II substations have been overloaded for far too long; serving Accra and its suburbs, which extend to as far as the Akwapim Mountains and a little beyond. Consequently, consumers experience low voltages and unreliable power supply, whilst GRIDCo incurs very high transmission losses. An outage at the Achimota substation, for instance, results in black out in many areas in Accra and beyond. This will soon be a thing of the Past!

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND SCOPE

The project will extend the 161kV network into CBD, with the construction of a 161/34.5kV substation at the ECG Station E, located off the Graphic road in Central Accra. Some loads being currently served from the Achimota and Mallam Substations will be redistributed to be served from the New Substation. The capacity of the double circuit 161 kV line between the Achimota and Mallam Substations will be upgraded from double circuit 282 mmsq conductor line, each with a capacity of 170 MVA to a double circuit twin bundle 430 mmsq conductor line, each with capacity of 488 MVA.

Additionally, a substation control room, system protection, metering, SCADA and communication facilities will be constructed and provided.

ECG on the other hand, will decommission and replace the existing 34.5kV double circuit transmission line between Avenor and the ECG Project Office at Ring Road West with an underground cable.

Other dignitaries at the sod-cutting ceremony included, the Managing Director of ECG, Mr Samuel Boakye Appiah, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Naoto Nikai , Country Director and other Representatives of Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Chief Executives of Power Utilities, Consultants and Contractors.

Father Of Three Remanded For Defilement

Samuel Agbeko, a father of three, and his brother, Kwame, have been charged with the defilement of a 13 year-old girl, at Kotobabi, Accra.

Agbekos brother, whose name was only given as Kwame, is however at large.
However, Agbeko, an electrician, pleaded not guilty, when he appeared before an Accra Circuit, presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku.

The Court turned down an application for bail filed by Agbeko's defence counsel, and he was, subsequently, remanded into police custody to reappear on April 6.

Meanwhile, a medical examination has found the victim to be 14 weeks pregnant.
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agnes Boafo told the Court that the complainant, an interior decorator, was the aunt of the victim, and she resided at Maamobi, in Accra.

However, the victim lived with her father at Kotobabi, she explained.
The Prosecutor said the accused person also lived, with his wife and children, in the house where the victim resided.

ASP Boafo explained that the victim and Agbeko's children were friends, so she usually visited them in their room.
She said on one of such visits in December 2016, Agbekos children were absent, so their father took advantage of the situation and lured her into a three-in-one stuffing chair, and had sex with her.

According to the Prosecutor, following that encounter, Agbeko made the girl his 'sexual partner'.

Then sometime in February this year, the victim was playing with Agbeko's children, when Kwame visited his brother.
The Prosecutor said Kwame instructed Agbekos children to leave the room, thus leaving the victim alone with him.

Kwame, consequently, had sex with the victim in the same stuffing chair that Agbeko had been using to abuse her, ASP Boafo said.

The victim, thereafter, reported the incident to the complainant, who reported it to the Police at the Nima Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, where a medical form was issued to the victim to go for examination.
The prosecutor said When Agbeko was arrested, he admitted the offence in his caution statement.

NSS Recruits Dismissal Case Adjourned

The Labour Division of the High Court on Monday adjourned hearing of an injunction application on the management of the National Service Scheme (NSS), from going ahead to dismiss workers recruited during the transition period.

The court adjourned the matter to April 5, after Madam Afua Abam from the Attorney Generals office told the court that they have not be able to file a acknowledgement to the application.

She prayed the court that they are new to the case, and would require ample time to go through the motion, and then file their affidavit in opposition if need be.

The court presided over by Justice Gifty Dekyem granted their request and ordered the AG to ensure it completes all forms of consultation with the NSS before the next adjourned date.

Ghana News Agency files indicate that the Applicant, Afetsi Kwashie, is in court challenging the legality of the dismissal of some 205 National Service personnel in February 2017, by NSS management.

The NSS, he said requires a board to sanction such an action as per the NSS act and as at the time of their dismissals the organization did not have a board.

He said the dismissed recruits felt unduly targeted and punished for no reason.
He is seeking a declaration that as a member of the Republic of Ghana the National Service Scheme lacks the authority to remove him from office without just cause.

The applicant again is seeking for the court to give an order for the NSS to reinstate plaintiff as an employee of the national service scheme, and upon this reinstatement, an order of the court to restrain the NSS from removing plaintiff from office without just cause, and to award cost against the defendant.

They were employed at the secretariat during the transition period from the old regime of the National Democratic Congress to the current New Patriotic Party administration.

We Dont Owe President Akufo-Addo Any Apology - Delta Force

New Patriotic Party (NPP) vigilante group, Delta Forces has stated that they do not owe President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo any apology for their raid at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council.

Vice Chairman of the group, Akwesi speaking on Adom Fms Morning Show Dwaso Nsem on Monday said they will continue tormenting the Security Coordinator till President Akufo Addo appoints a new person.

I dont think we owe the president any apology. We have not idea about it for now. What have we done wrong that we should apologize, he asked.

When reminded by the host that their conduct was usurping the powers of the president who appointed the embattled regional security coordinator and smacks of disrespect, he said why did they not say we were disrespecting them when we risked our lives to campaign for them to win power

He revealed that the leadership of that the group has no regrets in raiding the RCC and throwing out Mr George Agyei and will repeat it should he go back to the office questioning where he was when they were suffering in the trenches.

We do not know him..Where was he when we risked our lives campaigning. Our leaders asked us to look for a sponsor and so we settled Mohammed Seidu who invested close to one million Ghana Cedis in logistics and other things with the promise he was to be made the regional coordinator. Why did they bring an unknown person to occupy the position, he asked.

He indicated that it is not possible for them to risk their lives while some sat in the comfort of their air-conditioned offices only to be rewarded with the sweat of those who toiled.

We dont know Mr George Agyei and he didnt contribute to the victory of the party and so we dont need him. In fact, we dont regret attacking him at all and we will continue to storm the place and torment him till he is changed he said.

Our leaders promised to bring someone who understands us and that person is Mohammed Seidu. He supported us when we were all fighting for the victory of the party in the 2016 general elections and so we were shocked to hear that one Mr Adjei has been appointed and approved. We dont need him he stressed.
